View Full Version : Best OS for Benching
Simple question : I have the oppertunity to have a seperate HDD for each benchmark on HWBOT. What are the best OS for each benchmark.
3DMark2001SE
3DMark03
3DMark05
3DMark06
PCMark05
Super Pi 1 mil
Super Pi 32 mil
Aquamark3
Wprime 32
Wprime 1024
And please when there are different versions of the "best" or "better" OS please provide detail. So if Win XP is the option could the version be included. XP Pro sp2 for example. The same goes for the other OS options. Vista or Windows Server 2003 Standard Edition, Enterprise Edition and so on and so on.

These are my opinion although I use XP SP2 for everything letely:
3DMark2001SE: It used to be windows 2000 but I haven't used 2000 in a looooooong time. It seems most have gone to XP.
3DMark03: XP
3DMark05: XP
3DMark06: XP
PCMark05: Vista with a raid 0 array
Super Pi 1 mil: Windows server 2003
Super Pi 32 mil: Windows server 2003
Aquamark3: XP
Wprime 32: XP vista may do well in this.
Wprime 1024: XP vista may do well in this.
For Super Pi's some like to use XP 64bit which may also work well for WPrime.
I used to use XP Pro SP2 but have lost my install disk so now I have been reduced to windows XP home. Whichever the OS the best thing would be to use a minimal amount of processes. Play around and try to disable all uneeded processes. :thumb:

This would be a great subject for a benching guide
One thing you have to be careful about is not only SP version but also which updates were downloaded from MS at the time.
Still a good general topic for a guide :thumb:
Now has anyone tried win98SE for these benches??? Being a much smaller OS (more hassles with drivers though) you would think the results especially those relying on CPU/RAM would be better.
Thanks Harley I will be busy tonight installing OS and making clones of them, once I have done then testing will start.
I am having a problem with the DirectX aspect of Server2003. See attached image.

I am busy downloading the latest DirectX 9 and will try with that. But any help will be welcome. Have been using the guide on 2003 in benching forum.

Hmmm..... never ran across that  Try restarting dxdiag and when it asks about checking for WHQL certificates, say "no".
Did you enable hardware acceleration before you used dxdiag?
Pretty sure I did I followed the original guide pretty carefully. I will have another look when I get round to benching Pi again.

Are those drivers WHQL certified? If telling dxdiag to not check doesn't work, try uninstalling those drivers installing another set just to see if that works.
Yip that worked - had to take out CCC completely and then install only the graphic driver. All good now thanks boss.

Glad you got it working :thumb:
Did you try reinstalling CCC after you got it working? Let me know if you did, and if it still worked; I'll add a note about CCC to the guide. I guess I've never had that problem, I normally never install CCC. :o
Boss it seems that the problem was my version of CCC that I used - the latest version is not a problem. I have installed 2003 onto three other HDD since then and the only time I had repeat was when I used CCC 7.1 CCC7.8 not problem at all. Have also installed OS with only HD2900XT driver and will see if there is any difference in performance.
