I am totally dumbfounded. Tuesday evening the rig ran great with no problems I was actually trying to get a cpu-z over 5400. Last night I went to fire up the rig but brought it down to -100c before booting the first time which I believe was too cold. Then it would only try to start for a split second then shut down. I figured tomorrow is another day. The Q6600 came in so decided it was time for quad core fun. I cleared cmos and went to boot at about 20c and it was doing the same thing. I went to my pci card still no boot I tried ram in differant slots or only one stick and nothing. Cleared cmos put the 6800 in and removed the vmod figuring maybe it was loose. Nada. Right now I plan to leave the battery out till tomorrow and hope for the best. Oh yeah also checked the PSU w/ jumping the black and green and the fans work fine. :beat: :| :( :beat:

Every time I've had a problem like that after swapping cpu's it turned out to be poor contact between the cpu and the spring steel "pins" in the board. This is especially a problem if you use any thermal material inside the socket.

Just something to check.. ;)

Ouch!
Just a thought although you probably know this already, draining the power from the psu prior to clearing the cmos might help in this all too familiar scenario.

But in case it had slipped your mind in the heat of the moment.... i know as it happens to me all the time :)
Clearing a troublesome cmos.. which works for me and I use this method way too often when all else fails :smash:

disconnect the power cord, hold the power button on for a few seconds (often accompanied with a momentary flicker of life from the mobo) and then sometimes I've even removed all power plugs to the mobo prior to removing the battery for TEN or even THIRTY mins usually is enough to drain residual power from the board and clear the cmos. (credit to the guys over at evga for this one)

Good luck harleybro

My board does that all the time. The only time it's taken more than 4 hours to come good, is when the ram died. Maybe try different ram. My ram was running fantastic just before it died.

Yeah I waited two hours last night and another go with no results. Just in case since I have had sooooo many blown mosfets in the past I pulled the sinks off and everything looked normal. If it's the ram then both sticks went simultaniously. :hide: The problem happened even before I tried the Q6600. So now Im torn I am thinking of grabbing another P5K since I liked it so much so I have it in case the ram is fine orrrrrr grabbing a 680i and another GTX which I am really tempted to do. :beat: I did do the full drain of the PSU. I just do it with the switch but I do momentarily power the mobo to drain it.

Can you try your ram in your girlfriends rig, My 1st set of PC8500sli ram died in unison.

I actually pucked up another P5k testerday since there is noone within a 1 1/2 hour drive from me hat sells them. I first threw my old corsair UL's in the "dead" one. Still no boot so I set up the new one and got the mod on. (Haven't checked but I hope it works) it booted right up. Also On the new one I have threee sata ports that never worked on my old one from the start. I had thought it was a driver issue but I plugged into port 2 and it booted right away without a hitch. :)

Were any of the problems you had with these boards due to the power supply being fubar Harleybro?

JL that's where I am looking now. :thumb: The past two days I have been doing alot of research on PSU's. My issues didn't start until I went with quadcore. Granted an 850W should be just fine with a normally oc'd quad. Pumping 1.7v and running at 4500 is a differant ballgame. I recently came across what seemed to be a good calculator and apparently I need close to 29a on a single rail. :yikes: I am now looking into a Silverstone OP1000 which is a single rail psu with 80A. ;) :thumb:

Changed and went with Ultra X3 1000 (http://www.ultraproducts.com/product_details.php?cPath=97&pPath=632&productID=632). This PSU combines all four rails to give a total of 70A. Even though it appears as four rails they are bridged internally in the PSU. Also although the ripple is listed as 120mv under full load testing has shown closer to 20mv. :thumb:
