Got my RMA replacement card today thanks to the folks at Below-0.net and Kingmax (Melbourne) for their help in getting my Gecube X800PRO RMA replaced so quickly :thumb:

The cards' pics are uploaded here (http://www.fileshosts.com/ati/gecube/X800Pro/web/). The pics are the original card, but it's virtually the same as the RMA replacement, only difference is the last 4 digits of the serial number and that the replacement card's fan works :)

ATI Control Panel Overdrive Temp @ idle

http://www.fileshosts.com/pentium4/D1/abit/AI7/results/2.8C_SL6Z5_B542/HC200/kingston/khx3200k2/2x256/10_11/NB800/200-200-2226-F1EADE-1.525-3.2-1.65_X800Pro/overdrive_cat46.jpg

1. For some reason when i first boot into windows, ATI Tool reports my X800Pro's core/mem clocks @ 472/445. But when i hit default button, they are corrected to 474.75/450 ?? Overdrive ain't enabled so shouldn't my core always be @ 475mhz ?

2. in 3Dmark2003 cpu test 1 and test 2, the image quality or edges seem to be jaggedy or kind of blurred on the edges compared to the rest of the tests in 3Dmark2003 ?? I'm using Samsung 152T LCD monitor with Analogue connection to my Aten CS-84A 4port kvm switch. Is this a catalyst 4.6 bug ?

I'll update with more benchies later today :D

Overclocked benchies

Lazy way to get an idea of what the card does = ATI Tool 0.0.20

Find Max Core Speed with ATI Tool Temp in System Tray displaying

Core Temp idle = 36C
Heat Up
Phase 1 = 51C
Phase 2 = 55C
Phase 3 = 57C
Phase 4 = 61C
Phase 5 = 64C ended up artifact free = 576mhz on the Core

I know 3dmark can go higher without artifacts so at least that's a starting point.

Find Max Mem Speed = not sure if I should try given the ATI Tool 0.0.20 bug not being able to properly detect max mem clock so ATI Tool clocks mem way beyond what it can handle and burning out the ram. ATI Tool 0.0.21 lists the fix for this bug though.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Probing temps under load
Got a nice infra-read thermometer from coolpc.com.au which I originally got for measuring the back heater of my Mach2 prommy so decided to probe around the X800Pro while it's loop 3dmark2001 :)

The hottest part of the copper heatsink is the back end part facing towards the back of the video card = 37-38C under load. While the mid section of the heatsink was still only 32-34C under load. Meanwhile ATI Tool system tray temp is reporting 57-62C once i stop looping.

The hottest ram chips seem to be
1. the back side top 2 ram chips ~36-38C under load
2. the front side back 2 ram chips ~36-39C under load

While
1. the backside back 2 ram chips ~33-36C under load
2. the front side top 2 ram chips ~34-36C under load

Overclocked @ 550/600 the temps above you can add 4-6C to all measured spots on the card while under 3dmark2003 Nature test looping for 30 mins. The hottest part of the copper heatsink is still the back end part of the heatsink facing towards the back of video card. Hottest point on the PCB seems to be the clear PCB space between the front side back 2 ram chips measuring 43-45C

While @ 550/600 looping 3dmark2003 test 1-4 and stopping it after 10 loops each, ATI TOOL in systrem tray reports 62-64C

Would be nice if ATI TOOL, like MBM5 had a function to log to txt file at user defined intervals the GPU temps :)
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

.... more updates to come ... :)

thats becaue cpu's arent able to do AA or AF... that test is for the cpu only and will use little or none of your video cards rendering...

o and you can run the cats 4.6 w/o issues???
i cant run them at all grrr... ive had to boot to safe more uninstall them/reboot to safe mode agin reinstall DX9b then after yet another reboot install 4.5 cats...

have had to do it 3 times now even with a fresh instalation of xp :(

I suppose that the 564/605 was only for benching purposes? Or do you keep it there for games etc? I am getting my Built by ATI X800 XT PE this Saturday, Next Day Air! I believe that it too will clock that high.

One question: With the system below, will everything be okay on a 380W trupower antec? I certainly hope so... (I'd get 480W antec otherwise)

Eva, I can't really jump out and buy things like an awesome PSU. Would you imagine a 380W Antec TruPower to be good enough to run everything, or not? In time, I might upgrade, but not now. I spent too much on my new LCD and X800 XT PE...

Read the review for OCZ 520w psu and it rocked... So, I would say go for the higher if you're going to update to the latest graphic and so. Better have to much and a bit to little. :D

Even though it has been a while, a 9800XT was running perfectly on a 300w PSU with 1 HDD, 1 CD, and a 2.8C.

The X800 XT PE consumes less power than the XT. I have 1 HDD, 2 CD, and a 3.0C at stock voltages, all on a TruePower 380w PSU. So it seems that the X800 XT PE will in-fact run perfectly!

Blow up? The guys that did the 300w 9800XT test ran a looping benchmark with the card way O/Ced overnight! No errors, no resets ... He even spun up the CD-Rom drive!

The way I look at it, I have quite a bit of headroom on a Quality PSU. Stock speeds on the x800 XT PE, slight o/c on the chip...

4.6 official max core 559-564mzh
4.5 official max core 553-559mhz <-- so far still get the highest numbers in 3dmark2001 mark even with lower max core oc ???

Nise clocks and scores Eva2000, keep it up... :)
Your vga is clocking real good, especially the memory.
Just watercooled my Sapphire x800Pro, atitool maxed the core at 595 and the mem at 586, with tweakmonster ramsinks.

woah RootX just saw your sig 3.4EE  and Mach2 AI7 with X800Pro.. you're gonna surpass me very soon i see :D Has AI7 fixed the negative temp issue yet ?

did you mod the prommy cpu kit for AI7 or cut off the protruding cpu socket handle from AI7 ?

RootX
06-28-2004, 01:08 AM
I gave it a go yesterday, after installing the watercooling, and scored 30851 (http://service.futuremark.com/compare?2k1=7934847).
But u beat me in 03, :)
No, the negative temp issue is still there, :(

I had to cut off a bit of the socket handle and trim the promie cpu kit in order to fit.

eva2000
06-28-2004, 01:32 AM
nice score there :)

so trimming cpu kit is a must ? you can't just get away with cutting a bit off the socket handle (the curved bit right ?)

RootX
06-28-2004, 01:38 AM
Not sure if trimming the kit is necessary, to me it looked as if the kit couldn't install properly and no perfect contact would have been made between the promie's plate and the cpu...so I decided to go for it.
As for the socket handle, yes it's the curved bit that has to be removed.

Well an update...

Yesterday, I finally decided try out a 3rd party heat sink and went for the Thermaltake Giant3 since so many X800Pro users here are using it.

But!, no one warned me how bloody sharp the inside of the front Giant3 heatsink was  I went to pick up the front heatsink of the Gaint3 and the bloody inside sharp edges of the heatsink ripped into my finger - cutting 1cm x 1cm 'L' shaped gash into my typing finger :( My finger didn't stop bleeding for a full 5 mins

Decided to do the heatsink change another day for fear of cutting open my other fingers LOL

Fast forward to today. This time being extra careful handling the Giant3 heatsink, I managed to install it on my Gecube X800Pro and my god have the temps dropped even compared to my 128x38mm Delta 190cfm fan!

This is the progression:

stock heatsink
GPU Idle: 34-36C
GPU Load: 60-66C

190cfm fan with stock heatsink
GPU Idle: 28-30C
GPU Load: 44-48C

TT Giant 3 with ceramique paste
GPU Idle: 27-29C
GPU Load: 40-45C

The core had white type of paste on it already when I lifted the stock heatsink ?? The core numbers:

Gecube X800Pro
R420
215RAACGA11F
GB8812.1
0419AA
Taiwan

Will bench now to see if 5 minutes of bleeding was worth it LOL

here's my first full run using the old 2.8C@ stock 200fsb with Gecube X800Pro oc'd with 4.7beta drivers :)
