View Full Version : will Opteron 8xx (8-way) chips work in a Tyan 2-way board?

I want to get a pair of Opteron 8xx chips
(max 8-way) to use *some* day in a quad board,
but to use right *now* in a dual board,
the Thunder K8W (S2885 / S2885ANRF).
I've seen eBay 8xx sellers claim that this works.
A Tyan-USA support-rep says it won't.
A Tyan-Taiwan rep says it will.
Maybe the USA guys are just giving me
the "party line", maybe to sell quad boards.
Why would an 8-way chip work in a quad board and
not in a dual board?

Tyan is rather vague on that. They only say in a general sense, two Opteron processors.
Why are you considering the S2885 if you are planning to get the quad eventually? I ask because the quads don't support AGP and therefore using the AGP on the S2885 will be useless once you switch to the quad.

They should work on any S940 mobo.
Maybe he wants to build a server and does NOT need AGP at all... :thumb:

Huh?
That's why I'm asking for the reason to get the S2885. You are paying around $50 more to have an AGP slot on the board. There are other S288x boards in the Tyan line.
Confusion aside. I have noticed a few posts on other forums of people using the 8xx on the Tyan S288x line of boards. Still can't give an 100% proof positive on that though. :(

I can't think of a reason why it wouldn't work. Apart from the name being different, the board should treat it as a 2XX processor. I would get the latest BIOS still. It would probably be a good idea to read through the history of the BIOS and see if they have added support. Also, I've never had to deal with TYAN's support, but I would go with what the guy in Taiwan says. Some of the American arms of these mobo companies aren't exactly on the ball with the latest developments.
EDIT: YOU HAVE A PM.
