View Full Version : corsair XMS3700 first impressions.
Since I Have reviewed OCZ gold andTwinMOS 3700 I though it time to look at the best that Corsair can muster.Im testing a twinX kit of 2X512MB modules and do have a few first impressions.
Im only im memtest86 at the moment and I am running the board stock(without a vdimm mod) I hit 2.5-3-3-7 DDR500 with the OCZ gold at 2.85V and I can say this was 100% stable.Im at 3-7-4-3 with the corsair DDR484 and its NOT 100%.I can run higher with 3-4-4-8 timings but the latency is just too great and the speed is pants.
Im going to try and show all 3 brands at the best stable speed I can get with the limitations set by bios, then I will connect the vdimm mod and see what adding volts does to help.
More to come.

interesting indeed.. are corsair xms3700 voltage locked and/or mem timing locked (like ocz pc3700 premier series) ?
I thought the timings were pretty much locked on the corsair..seems this is not true.I can say trying to boot at cas2.5 or lower at ddr466 is a waste of time because it won't!
Also I have backed down to 2.75V and it seems a little happier, still running 3-4-3-7 timings.

Yes im testing with and without tweaks...

Well...
Im going to buy a gig of OCZGold and a gig of 3700XMS..both 4 x 256 and compare the two.Corsair would like an "Unbiased review" and OCZ have said its no problem either.Im trying to get all modules sent from one retailer here in the UK, the XMS is 4 to 7 days so there will be a wait.
A true CLASH OF THE TITANS...LOL
more soon!

I know companys don't like when you crap on their ram but oh well:D.Thats the whole point of a review to give the reader vital information and not make them waste their money.Corsair always made great ram but now they are being beaten by others like OCZ and Twinmos.Anyways, looking forward to the 2 way shootout.I really don't like when the companys supply the ram for review.I am happy to see your going to get it from a retailer.Thats what I call a true review of what you can expect when you buy ram from a retailer.

i think youre gonna be very disappointed in the OC and performance of 4x modules.

I think it will depend on what mobo he uses. The DFI 875 Pro is suppose to work great with 4 modules aswell as one other board did, can't remember which other one it was.

worst comes to worst it wont be a 1gb shootout ;)
might end up being a 4x ram moboard shootout ;)
we already know the p4p800 aint in this game :na:
i havent even tested the slots on the IC7 yet ~ im using 2+4 as usual
4x mem has always been a bad idea for DCDDR overclockers.

Good point on the moboard shootout.
As far as the memory review, I think we already know who is going to be the winner here.
With the Samsung 5ns chips and the (mandatory) relaxed timings I think Corsair blew it this time.
With my XMS 3700 (2x512) modules in the blue slots I couldn't even get my P4P800 to boot until I went in the bios and relaxed the timings.
In the black slots I couldn't even get it to boot to the bios.
RMA Today!!! Corsair opened the door and OCZ is walking right in.
BT,
I give you credit. . . I tested the Corsair's for 1 day and got rid of them. The timings are way too laxed and the OCZ definitly beat them. . . . They should have never released the chips based on the 5ns chips.

still waiting on my xtremeddr pc3700 memory and p4c800 but they definitely can do 250mhz too!

He has lots of patience m8... :)
Thugs
I have had no problems running 4 modules in the P4P800 at ddr500..what problems did you have?
ThugsRook
07-02-2003, 10:59 AM
on the p4p800 i couldnt get the blue ram slots to work for me stable at all.
on the ic7 i couldnt hold performance settings so it was rather slow.
(4x 512mb)
I have run 4 gold modules at ddr500 cas2 at 3V+ and cas2.5 at 2.85V.I think it may be that they are 256 and not 512 that helped maybe.
ThugsRook
07-02-2003, 11:24 AM
could be.
youre doing great with the 4x 256mb tho
when are the 512mb modules gonna show up?
Not for a good while..its very hard to get larger chips to run as fast.OCZ are thinking of testing 4 modules together and offereing 1gig kits of gold which should be just as good.
I have 4 OCZ 3700's, 256 MB Goldies running at DDR500 on the P4C800 Deluxe and P4C800-E Deluxe with 2.5-3-3-7, so I think it is a GREAT idea for OCZ to sell them as a Quad kit. .
:yummy:
heres a nice scan of what the 3700 looks like with no heat spreader.

Ooooo its naked!
bigtoe ~ you were saying something in another thread about 4x ram having a possitive performance effect over just 2x ram.
any benchmarks or further comments on that?

TCCC samsung chips are the same ones used for xtremeddr.com's pc3700 memory as well but they have much better timings @250mhz on P4C800

I didn't buy the ram m8, plus i should have another gig of it on the way.
Its CORSAIR XMS3700.You can buy genuine samsung with the exact same SPD for half the price..also note that its not on corsair PCB.And finally by all accounts it has been withdrawn anyway.

It seems corsair have withdrawn the XMX3700 and are now concentrating on PC4000 instead.

wonder who's gonna be first to pc4500 :D
OCZ are working on DDR533 capable ram..it will however probably be labelled as DDR500.
They are also looking at DDR466 with 2-2-2-5 timings which should be sweet async, although async may need TRAS at 7 or 8

Hahahaha, did they make an offical on that BT? I'm so glad I got rid of them. . . . . . . .
One of the retailers let it slip to a friend of mine that no more is available..looks like we wait for XMS4000..
Im still on to get 4X256MB modules of the XMS and FULL retail Gold so i will still do a large comparison review...who knows corsair may send me some 4000 to add into the mix:)

Goes to show you just how great these reviews are that you guy's do here at BleedinEdge.
I sent my so called " Corsair " 3700 modules back last week. I admit I jumped the gun.
Next time I will wait till you guy's do a review on any hardware before I try it myself.
BT, Thugs, and the rest of you great reviewers, keep up the good work. You're helping a lot of us out and you all desirve a pat on the back.
THANK YOU
