View Full Version : How high can OCZ 3700EL Gold Rev 2 go?

Hi,

I've got a rig as per my sig with OCZ PC3700 Gold Rev 2 at 2.5-3-3-7 and a P4C 3.0 running at 3.6, so I know this memory is very happy to run at 240MHz. And I'm happy that it's happy!

However, I've been trying to go a little higher, but can't seem to get Prime stability. Temps are not a problem, as under load the CPU max's at 50c.

I've tried the following all at an FSB of 247MHz vCore at 1.565:
FSB:MEM 5:4, 2.5-3-3-7 @ 2.65v - system locks after a while
FSB:MEM 3:2, 2.5-3-3-7 @ 2.85v - not prime stable
FSB:MEM 3:2, 2.5-4-4-8 @ AutoV - system locks after a while
FSB:MEM 1:1, 2.5-4-4-8 @ 2.85V - not prime stable

the following all at an FSB of 244MHz vCore at 1.565:
FSB:MEM 1:1, 2.5-4-4-8 @ 2.85V - not prime stable

the following all at an FSB of 244MHz vCore at 1.6:
FSB:MEM 1:1, 2.5-3-3-7 @ 2.85V - not prime stable

Has anyone gotten stable systems with a similar overclock? I'm not really that well versed in the memory timings, so any suggestions would be very welcome. I think the CPU will handle this. Should I have gotten PC4000?

Alternatively, would this RAM handle tighter timings at 240MHz?

Many thanks!

I think the CPU is topped out. Most P4Cs top out between 3.6 and 3.7gHz, some higher, some lower. Since you have tried running at lower ratios, and can't get stable, that strongly suggests that the ram is not the problem, and that you have reached the highest that your CPU can tolerate.

Been working today with someone else here that tops out with a 3.0 at 3.5, so you are doing well. See this thread:

you should try running CAS 3-3-3-5... my 3700 gold rev.2 does 255 with those timings with only 2.7v

CAS 3 isn't that slower than CAS 2.5 anyway

My 3700 Golds, original not rev 2 do 2.85V @ 2-3-3-6 at 260FSB 1:1 Max. . .

Yeah, I had been thinking the same tbh, I just didn't want to give up! :) I'm pretty pleased with the 3.6 overclock, but I've caught the o/c bug!

I guess the main reason I was trying for something higher is that I was able to run it at 248 for close to an hour with the vCore at 1.7 (probably not a great idea, but I had been drinking :p ) and the memory at 3:2 2.5-4-4-8. when I first started overclocking this rig. Thought I'd make another stab at it, but tweak the mem a bit more just in case.

I'll give it a whizz at 3-3-3-5 like n_u_f_a_n suggests and see how it goes.

Thanks for the feedback!

Ack! I think I should quit while I'm ahead. :) Tried it at 3-3-3-5 and 3-3-3-6 with no luck. Did quick tests with Super PI and it had closure issues..

Guess the ol' CPU is working its ass off to the Max!

Not to worry. Thanks.
