The best for you may not be the best for me. Maybe if you provided more of what you are looking for in a system we could then know a little better what to recommend. Also, are there any brand of boards that you like over others?

I agree.....If you are looking for basic pretty much most all would do fine without much noticeable difference...if you are looking for feature specific that gets a bit more vague as many have many differnet things and combination of things but the cost rises dramatically...

Now ofcourse the question I would ask is are you talking about OCING????

I think currently many would tend to look at Abits IC7 and Asus's P4P800.....

Well the others are correct that without your needs known hard to recomend one. However I can give you a few that will fit the bill for most situations.

Best Value, with performance alos an concern, ABIT IS-7 for aorund a 100 dollars you get 200$ performance with respect to memory bnadwidth and processing powe. DOes not have all the bells that more expensive boards have, but a good contender. The IS-7 uses a SPirngdale Chipset that seems in many cases to be a relabeled Canterwood chipset so you might get similar performance for half the price. Review the, ports and such before making this buy. BUt hard to beat for strict raw performance

Best Stability, one of the Intel Boards. INTEL boards are designed to be ultra stable. They give up some performance because of this. THe are a little more than the IS-7 but if you want ultimate stablility, this is your choice.

Top end costs no limit, becomes a sticky wicket. THe IC-7G form ABIT is fast and has firewire as well as 4 SATA ports, RAID compatible but only has 2 IDE ports that are not RAID, and onboard Gigabyte LAN. ASUS 4800Deluxe has 4 SATA but only 2 of them are RAID configurable. SOYO Dragon 2 platnium has a multitude of Disc Drive options but is not as fast as ABIT or ASUS, need onboard SCSI? GIGABYTE has a MOBO that has that. SOME MOBOs loose the legacy serial port some do not. Most have decent on-board sound at this level but again most users here are going to install thier own sound cards. Want to go to LAN PArties the DFI 875 LAN MOBO is already to go with a Holloween color scheme that glows in blacklight. Perfect for Case Modders. It is also pretty fast.

So like the folks said what is it you are looking for?
