View Full Version : RAID 0 Lost...

Alright, so I don't know what happened. More or likely it's probably my fault. But anyways.
So I installed a bunch of programs on my computer, after installing XP and figuring out the problem with RAID, as shown on my previous thread. It was all good, I installed everything that I needed.
NOW, this is the part where I probably made a bad mistake.
I shut down the computer, turned off the power, and disconnected all the cords since I knew it was working. Next day (today), I plugged everything back in, and it completely lost the RAID array. I can't access XP. It's like I lost everything, pretty much.
I'm running a diagnostic test on it, so I can repeat the steps to make my RAID array again. Although, I bet all of my data will be lost.
Is this suppose to happen when you shut off all power? Or could there be a problem with the CMOS battery? It's a fresh battery...

Should not happen.
Check your bios setting and ensure that your raid setup is still there.

Update:
Ok so I ran a test, and now VIA can detect the drives...but why does it keep on losing the information like that? I have my data, but it would be so tiring to keep on putting in that disk and running the test every time.......

Sadly not familiar with Via Raid setup - does it not show up in Bios and remain active there ?

I've yet to see it on BIOS. In the BIOS all it has it Promise settings...I might just have to revert to that at one point.

Hi SpacePyro,
 Sounds as if the VIA controller might be defective. Can't see why unplugging would cause this problem. When you are in windows can you tell me what it shows in the Device Manager in the Disk Drives column as well as the SCSI and RAID controllers columns?

Do you have the BIOS option "OnChip SATA Boot ROM"? If so, make sure it is enabled. Also check your owners manual in section 5.5.5 for the select boot array settings in the BIOS - the one where you hit TAB when it's booting and it takes you into the VIA RAID setup. Make sure to specify a boot array in there so your PC knows to boot from that array.
Dang I haven't played with the ASUS VIA RAID stuff in awhile...I used to know it second nature.

Hi Joeman,
Check this thread if you haven't. http://www.bleedinedge.com/forum/showthread.php?t=22379 Maybe you can glean why his array doesn't appear in BIOS or what it might actually be called? It took the WD diagnostic software to rattle it into seeing it at all the first time. Bad drive or controller maybe. Also when it is enabled and working I don't know what it should show up as in the BIOS because we never checked through it once it was.

It might be a bad controller. I always have to run the WD software to make the drives recognized...it takes about 10 minutes to get the WD diagnostic running. After that I quit the program and the computer runs like normal.
If I changed from VIA to Promise would I lose all my data? I might have to switch to that...

did you attach the raid-0 drives back into the right ports?...what im trying to say is if you have setup the raid-0 array via the Promise ports then it 's got to stay there...the raid wont work if attached to the VIA controller or vice-versa...
If I changed from VIA to Promise would I lose all my data? I might have to switch to that...
yes you will-because you'll end up setting up the array again then reformat then load the raid driver using F6 then install your OS...

Yeah, I set the drivers on VIA. Cables are on VIA. Promise is just an optional RAID thing that I have, but I disabled that.

Is your motherboard button battery good? Just a thought...

Yeah, I installed a fresh new one in there.
