View Full Version : Lots of P4C800-E Memory Questions

I have been reading the test results from the forums and still have questions on memory for my next project PC. Around 8 months ago I built a PC for my daughter to take to school for graphic design courses (It needed to be fast with great graphics). It was an Asus P4C800E / 2.8C / 4 - 512M sticks of Hyper-X PC3500 / 2- 40 GIG Raptor RAID Array / Antec True Power550 / with an ATI 9800 Pro 256 Meg video card. To keep it simple I used the ASUS overclocking in the BIOS. The thing flies, it is the fastest PC I have ever used and is rock stable. The FSB is around 900mhz and the CPU is running around 3.2gig according to the speed tests that I have run. My dilemma is that I am going to build another PC for my son (his let the smoke out… PII 300 running at 450 for all its life) and it will be another Asus P4C800E / 2.8E / 2- 40 GIG Raptor RAID Array / Thermaltake Silent Pure Power 480 with an ATI 9700 Pro 256m video card. What memory do I use??? I want to run 1 gig total but have seen some reports showing double sided is faster than the single sided Kingston that I used last time, BUT I have also read that the PAT will not enable if you overclock while using 4 double sided sticks of memory.

From the Anand Tech test “The fastest configuration should be 4 Double-Bank DIMMs on the Intel 875 chipset motherboard. Our first efforts to test this configuration, with 4 x 256 DS OCZ 3700 GOLD modules did not show 4 DS DIMMs any faster than 2 DS DIMMs on the ASUS P4C800-E. This was a real puzzle considering that other predicted configurations were easily verified with Quake3, Super PI and other benchmarks. When we looked deeper, the problem became clear. In every configuration that we had tested with the ASUS P4C800-E, the Performance Mode showed “enabled” but with 4 DS DIMMs at any FSB speed faster than 800, CPU-Z 1.18C shows Performance Mode “disabled”. Our trial was failing here because we were comparing 2 DS DIMMs with PAT on to 4 DS DIMMs with PAT off.”

So my main question is what memory configuration will give me the best performance with the 2.8E??? I am attempting to keep the memory price under $350 or so. Will 2 512 double sided sticks be better than 4 256 double sided sticks because of the PAT issue? Is PAT technology a factor? Is there a fix to make PAT work if I run 4 double-sided sticks of memory? Will I run faster with 4 sticks of Kingston PC4300 with the loose 3 4 4 8 timings or 4 (or 2 if preferred) sticks of OCZ 4200 EL with 2.5 4 4 7 timings? Does the 2.8E overclock better than the 2.8C? Will the factory Intel cooling fan work? Should I remove the goo that Intel put on their heatsink and replace it with silver heatsink paste? Wow that is a lot of questions…
Please keep in mind that stability and longevity are paramount and speed is just a bonus to buying the good stuff.

Thanks,
Greg

It all depends on how your 2.8 will clock. If 240 ish fsb is the goal then i would look at either the 3700Gold rev2 or the new 3500EB.If the 3500EB is to expensive look at the 3200EB..this uses the same IC's but with lower yield, more voltage can usually get then flying though ;).

I would stay with 2x512 dimms for now..PAT is enabled and the modules clock pretty well.

Gregmcd,

:welcome: to the BleedinEdge. . .

To answer your questions:

So my main question is what memory configuration will give me the best performance with the 2.8E???

Depends

I am attempting to keep the memory price under $350 or so. Will 2 512 double sided sticks be better than 4 256 double sided sticks because of the PAT issue?

4 chips give slightly better results in benchmarks I run with 2 chips, don't care about the extra .2%

Is PAT technology a factor?

No, Canterwoods do not have this problem

Is there a fix to make PAT work if I run 4 double-sided sticks of memory?

Same as above

Will I run faster with 4 sticks of Kingston PC4300 with the loose 3 4 4 8 timings or 4 (or 2 if preferred) sticks of OCZ 4200 EL with 2.5 4 4 7 timings?

Tony said it above, depends on the CPU OC.

Does the 2.8E overclock better than the 2.8C?

It's the luck of the draw. my 2.8E makes it to 270FSB on AIR. . .

Will the factory Intel cooling fan work?

Yes, but if you plan on a Prescott running over 250FSB, get a better cooler, Like the SLK series.

Should I remove the goo that Intel put on their heatsink and replace it with silver heatsink paste?

Silver all the way. The Intel Goo is crap

Hope that helps ya.

Thanks…
Wow that was a lot of answers, and fast too. Yes this did answer all of my questions and raised a couple more. How do you find the ratio between the fsb and the CPU clock speed? Where is the best place to get OCZ memory and their new silver paste quickly? I keep looking at the pile of hot rod PC parts and the missing link is the memory… It would be nice to have it for this weekend…

Thanks again for all of the great info,
Greg

gregmcd , welcome to BE.

A couple places to get get OCZ ram include SVC.com and newegg.

Also, with a 2.8E I would definately consider going with an SP94 HSF assembly teamed with a quality 92mm fan and some good case ventilation as they run hotter than the 2.8cs.
G/L!

OK I dusted off my Newegg account and ordered the RAM, cooler and fan. OCZ PC3700 EL rev.2 1 gig kit, Thermalright SP-94 cooler and Vantec stealth 92mm fan.

So here I am with more questions.
1. Is this fan big enough for the cooler, it supplies 28 cfm @ a very stealthy 20db? Quiet is good, but I don’t need the CPU to quietly melt away to never never land.
2. Is the paste supplied with the cooler ok or should I buy a tube of silver heatsink paste? If so what brand works the best, and where do I find it at a good price?
3. What is the maximum safe temp the Prescott will run at long term?
4. What is the best way to measure the temp? I have a raytec that is very accurate but I am not sure if the cooler temp or exposed perimeter of the chip will accurately reflect the core temp.

Thanks once again for all of the help. It amazes me how much information I can get from a few posts on this board. It has save me a lot of time and grief. Just Awesome…

Greg

Hey ProfessorFate,
Nice Camaro!!! Looks like a 68 RS but the pic is so small it may be hiding the vent windows. In my favorite color scheme no less… I am not even sure if they made a 67 drop top?

The SP-94 is awsome, the fan is OK, but the more CFM you go for, the louder the fan, also the better the cooling. You might want to consider a Delta fan.

Artice Silver or OCZ Silver

3. What is the maximum safe temp the Prescott will run at long term?

Idle shoulde be around 44-50 C, Load no more then 70C It does run Hotter then the Northwood

4. What is the best way to measure the temp? I have a raytec that is very accurate but I am not sure if the cooler temp or exposed perimeter of the chip will accurately reflect the core temp.

Use MBM (Motherboard Monitor or ASUS Probe)

Great stuff, I'm sure you'll like it all. I use a Thermaltake 90mm High Performance 2 Ball Bearing DC Fan, Model "A9025A-2B (http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDesc.asp?description=11-999-108&depa=0) with my SP94. Good flow and pretty quiet too.

And the Camaro is indeed a 68 RS/SS. I used to own a 68 SS396 convert and miss it terribly. :p
