I got a new opty 165 to play with and am toying with the notion of removing the IHS, what do ya guys think?

I never done it myself, but was thinking of doing the same to my 64 Venice. Do some google searching maybe something will turn up.

Depends on how u plan to cool it - Phase change or similar ( dry ice ..etc...) nope don't touch the IHS.

Water or copper block you might gain a few Hz at the expense of voiding warranty and/or your ability to resale the processor - In other words a one way ticket this action will be.

Here is some reading for you to pounder about and some possible tip/tricks/tools/product that might make the task easier should you elect to go forward..

Personaly I got all to do the job, but have since got a Phase Change unit which I still have to install - so maybe when done with that and a new opty down here I might try it with my 4000+ on aircool - but it's not on the near horizon project.

it all depends.

how are your temps right now?

i've had some REALLY good results on lowering temps by removing my IHS.

My most recent one I removed dropped temps from 50C's load to 40C's load.

I should do my own guide for removing the IHS.

I've done 3 chips and have decreased removal time from about 30 minutes to around 5 minutes! :)

for the 1 or 2 mhz you might gain, its hardly worth the warranty, and you will have a limited number of heatsink/block reseats, as well you have to be SUPER delecat with it. For me, even a 10DegC drop isnt worth the 3 year warranty, considering i have allready had this cpu die on me (cause of a crappy enermax psu)

from what iv head the core is just as strong as the xps so you do not have to be extreemly delicate just be awate that it is more prone to damage than with IHS

if you have a heavy heatsink, and you move the case at all, you are putting a hell of a lot of force on the corners of the die! I just deal with the IHS, i dont mind it really!

ok Im gonna pop off the IHS seeing as the chip is pretty FUBARed might as well go all out I already ordered a replacement

in that case then, you raise a really good point :P

yupp no fear of messin it up lets see how much voltage it take for 3ghz:D :mischeif: :fire:

hahaha, for the hell of it, if you are done with it entirely, you should test how an IHS CPU reacts to not having a Heatsink!

I dont want to **** off the processor gods that much:beat:

im tempted to go back to frys and get the TEC I was eyeballing:mischeif: :D :fire:

My advice, dont do it. For one, its really hard to take off, its not meant to be removed, so you could risk damaging the CPU. And its not THAT much of a temp drop, maybe 3-5C.

it is not all that hard to take off if you know what your doing and the chip is now expendable so it will not hurt my feelings any if It does get (more)damaged:fire: :fire:

Only two physical reasons to be concerned about removing the IHS.

1. You could chip a cornor. (Very easy to do with the massive heatsinks and high pressures we tend to use.)
2. You might have to dittle with spacers just to get a heatsink or block to mount since you have just shortend the CPU. (Very trouble some. Can be more trouble than it is worth.)

already know how to space it out for my water block put 2 dimes underneath the nut and use the blue top(open die) nut:thumb: and as I said I'm not worried about damaging it

I removed the one on my X2 4600 and the a3700 I got from you Dave. Have to be very carfull, I chipped two little electric gizzmoez on the top of the a3700, still works fine, but they must have been for something.
The X2 went fine, no damage to the chip at all, I took my time only working from the corners in and being sure the blade did not go very far under the IHS at all. It helpped drop my temps about 2degrees, but I got no more of an OC out of it. I also had to MOD my X-120 heat pipe to fit properly without hitting the raised section of the socket. Had to take quit a bit off the one side and alittle off the attaching strap mounts.
GLHF.

TECs are fun :D Make sure you got a seperate power supply to power it, or make sure your 12v line has 12Amps to spare

my power suppply has 12amps to spare, 55amps quad rail

i removed my ihs 2 weeks before. And thought about it for 2 months... after doing it... with a small razor its very easy if you push it carefully under the IHS... easy work..

after that ive just tried the same procedure with a pentium 3 ( coppermine ) and a cutter. No damage, no faults.. easy game. Both cpu´s are running very cool and work fine..

Pentium3 900@1100 ( @ 40°C )
X² 4400+ 2200@2900 ( @ 33°C , 1,54V ) ( <- 22°C water temp )

after all i can say im happy that ive done it..
