View Full Version : Mix N Match HDD: ATA100 and SATA?

I believe I have an ATA100 120GB HDD and I wonder whether I can use it in conjunction with the esteemed SATA WD Raptor, the Raptor as a master on Controller 0 and the 120GB as a master on Controller 1?
I'm new at this computer lark, so forgive me if I'm talking out me bum, but I seriously want to learn and to leave the dark days of Dell well behind me. (Illiterations forever!!)
Really what's going on with me is that I'm building a new system with the best that I can currently afford: 3800+ x2, ASUS Mobo, OCZ Gold 2x512, 500w PSU, and then relieving the Dell 4600 I am writing with currently of its storage and optical drive.
When I recover from the cost of it all, I want to have stuff I can expand upon, hence, the Raptor. (I'm thinking of striping it with one of its brethren.) But until then, can I mix and match?
Please give me a leg up!

:welcome: to BE NewNimproved. Hope you enjoy time here. We are here to help and take you to the BleedinEdge.

With sata drives you won't have to worry about master and slave. Just plug into a sata port and your system should recognise it. As for the ATA100 drive, I think (and could be wrong) that it will hook to the board using an IDE cable. You can set it to master. From there go into your bios and select the boot order (probably the raptor).

Let us know if you have any troubles. We're here to help.

Below is some information we post for new members that some have said was helpful such as The BleedinEdge Story (http://www.bleedinedge.com/forum/be_pagegen.php?id=about_be). When we are not tweaking our rigs or helping folks out we put our unused cycles to work the the BE Folding@Home Team Info (http://www.bleedinedge.com/forum/showthread.php?t=1418)

Every month, the BleedinEdge members and crew decide by vote on a "Member of the Month". The MOTM is someone who has been a positive force in the BE community (helpful, skilled, good-natured, good-poster, etc.) for that month, as judged by his or her peers. Like Snafu said, the drives will work perfectly together. The only thing I would do differently is set the IDE drive to "cable select", it probably doesn't really matter though, I just haven't use "master/slave" settings for a long time. Just make sure to carefully read the MB manual to see which SATA port you need to use for a single drive, it's usually different than the ports for raid setups. The IDE drive should hook up with a regular IDE cable, or you can use an IDE/SATA adapter to avoid having the large ribbon cables.
