I am planning on hosting a lanparty of just a few people, but I want to make a good impression. I have used linux to set up a dhcp server but have really never messed with giving each person a hostname. The network will not be connected to the internet.

For example when Joe connects his computer to the network, the dhcp server gives him an ip addy and also allows everyone to type 'ping joe' and it will resolve his ip address.

Any help would be appreciated!

Welcome to the forum buildabear

I'm not that familiar with setting up a DHCP server. At least not in software, and certainly not in Linux. The hardware servers I've messed with (yes I realize I'm dealing with software on the hardware but you know what I mean) - I don't think you can change a host names via DHCP though you may be able to set up an alias of some sort, but that would require you to know everyone's computer name in advance I would think. I'm talking completely out my butt right now, I'll have to do a bit of research on the matter.
