First, lemme say I have never liked RPG's. My uncle gave me The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind and told me to try it out. This game rocks! It's the only RPG I've ever been able to stand playing for more than a couple hours. It's got enough realism in it that I don't feel like a 9 year old daydreaming about Harry Potter. But it does have quite a strong fantasy side to it... with the magic and potions and spells. The graphics are very good... terrain looks great... characters look good, but don't move particularly good, but believe me, when you sink into Morrowind, you're not studying the character's movements =)
Basically the way the game starts is you're a prisoner, you can't remember what you've done, but you're being released. So your life starts... you begin by deciding what race you want to be, different races have different skills and traits. For example, one race might be immune to poison, but have a weakness to fire. Then you decide what time of year you want to be born, and that also determines your skills and traits.
You have the opportunity to join many different guilds, or factions, such as a Fighter's Guild, Mage's Guild, Thieve's Guild... or other groups, such as the Imperial Legion, the Blades. You have to talk to people, ask them questions (chosen from a list) and get information... the leaders of the guild or faction that you're in will assign you duties, and often reward you with money or spells when you complete them. You learn skills by doing stuff... for example... casting a Fire Strike spell ads to your Destruction skill. And casting a healing spell on yourself ads to your restoration skill. As you increase your skills, your level increases... at each level increase, you choose 3 characteristics to improve, such as Personality (to interact with people better), Speed (to run faster and dodge attacks), Strength (to carry more items and hurt people more when you attack them).
I don't really know if there's an end to the game, or what exactly the final goal is... but... I've been playing it every day for 2 weeks straight and it's awesome =)
If you're not sure about RPG's, this is a game you might consider trying. If you like RPG's, this is a must have.

Glad you are enjoying the game Jeff! That is what computers are made for (Gaming!)? I would probably try it, but I can't stand fantasy games (Elves, Dwarves, Blahh) so I am waiting for Star Wars: Galaxies to take my try at Role Playing. From the way you described it though, Morrowind sounds strangely appealing. I may try it yet!

You won't be disappointed... there is a fantasy side to it, but if you choose, you can be a warrior type person and develop your character that way. You don't have to fool with the magic stuff... although potions do help when you're out in battle and can't stop to rest because there's too many enemies near you. I paid $40 for it because my uncle recommended it to me... and I'm not sorry I paid $40 for it... if I had played it first, I probably would have paid $75 for it.

Killing stuff is my forte so I wouldn't mind being a warrior. I guess it can't hurt (except my wallet) to try something new. I wonder how cheap I could find it for? A guy in my dorm last year played Morrowind 24/7. We called him the Hermit. I will blame you, Jeff, if I turn into a hermit. :D :D :D LOL.

You might not wanna get it then... I started playing it today around 11 AM... then when I had enough I looked at the time and it was 4:30, lol.

Amazon has it for $27... and you'll get free shipping on that too. You can find it cheaper on eBay, but they're either used copies, or shipping is like $10. I'd get it from Amazon... at least then you know it's a good copy and not something someone else has scratched to hell or stolen.

I might check my local Walmart/Kmart/Target/ and Hastings video before I buy it off the net. I know one of those stores has to have it in the bargain bin :) I am actually pretty excited to play it now, so I don't know if I could even wait for a company to ship it to me. Sounds very addictive man. Like crack. . . but that's another story. Thanks Jeff.

If you get it and need help getting started just come back here and let me know... I'll give ya my e-mail address so I can give ya a few tips and suggestions.
Biggest generic tip I can give is SAVE OFTEN, and use different names so if you start a course of action that could screw things up, you can go back to before you did that. It really sucks when you kill someone you need later in the game... or someone attacks you, and you kill them, then find out they were in your guild and you get expelled.

Yea, it will be a few days before I get to town again (I live on a farm) so I will pick it up then. I will definately keep you updated because I am 100% sure I will need help. I have never even played this genre before! Scary. :!:

There's cheats for it too... but I strongly advise you not to use any of them... it REALLY takes the fun out of it... you'll get extremely bored with it extremely fast if you do stuff like activate god mode.

There's cheats for it too... Ahhh... fingernails on chaulkboard. Cheats make me cringe. I never use them. They pretty much eliminate fun and/or replayability. :(

Hey Jeff! I got Morrowind at Walmart for $29.99! I love that store. Anyway, I am preparing to fire it up. Hopefully I can update you later tonight on whether or not I like it! Peace! ;)

Jeff, I am addicted to this game. I get no sleep. My friends and family are mourning like I have died. I am pasty white. Please tell me that it gets boring the more you play. I want my life back. LOL. This game rules. :D

I am getting dang good at bartering. I can get almost anything for free. Most of the missions are only hard because oyu have to walk for like ten miles before you get to do anything and if you forget to save, you have to walk all that way again. I wish there was a way to go faster (horses!). I am still only level 2 though. I takes forever to level up? I don't know why? This game is so much fun though. Just vast as far as content.

You have to build your skills by fighting, reading books, paying people to teach you stuff, etc. Use the Silt Strider to go between places... or join the Mages Guild and use their transportation thing. The map that comes with the game is very handy.

Hey Jeff, I don't have a clue why, but the game keeps randomly shutting down. I have it patched to latest version and I have NO other system instablilites. My comp is solid as a rock. I was just wondering if maybe ATI cards have any issues with the game or maybe the CAT drivers in particular?

I was having that problem too with my old Gainward GF4 Ti4200 @ 275/500... but it's not happening with this new one I have, an Asus Ti4200 overclocked to 325/650. I know the game is pretty CPU intensive... is your CPU or RAM overclocked? In the past I've used Morrowind to find instabilities with overclocks... I've passed Prime 95 and memtest before, and then found instabilities in Morrowind. I think maybe because Morrowind does a good job of stressing the CPU, RAM, and video card all at once.

I know the game is pretty CPU intensive... is your CPU or RAM overclocked? Yea, my 1.466GHz 1700+ is overclocked to 2.1GHz w/400 FSB, but my RAM is stock speeds. I have had zero probs with any of my other games and or looping 3dmark2001/2003 for days on end! I highly doubt it is my system, but I guess I could be wrong. I will test it by setting everything to default speeds and get back to you. Thanks.

Just wondered how you're doing with the game... it's been a while since I've talked to you about it =) I'm currently a level 38, and I'm going to restart cause I didn't know what I was doing at the beginning of the game and killed someone essential to my quest =)

Hey Jeff = ). Well I worked all summer long nearly 14 hours every day farming. So, I had very little time for gaming heh. When I did have time to play, I usually spent it playing Star Wars: Galaxies. I am back at college now and should have more time to play Morrowind since the campus internet will not allow me to play Star Wars. I'm tellin you Jeff, you outta try Star Wars :) You will become addicted hehe. Anyway, thanks for checkin up on me.... Jay~

How is SWG? Is it designed well? Good servers?
I'm beta testing Horizons, and the servers seem pretty slow... takes a LONG time to complete trades... items don't show up in your inventory for quite a while... I'm talking hours.

Actually, SWG is just comin out of it's shell =) It is really starting to do the things that it originally promised to do. It offers an incredible gameplay experience and the graphics are amazing (and taxing on your system). The servers are now pretty stable and almost all issues with the trading or the like have been solved. I highly recommend that you try the game and get established monitarily so that when the space expansion comes out you can afford a nice ship! Hehe. Jay~

This is unbelievable....I haven't got so "into" a game in 10 years.....I've maintained for 10 years now that nothing really ever beat Rise of The Triad (1994) for my favorite game ever. FINALLY, one did.....this is now my favorite game of all-time!!
Everyday I can't wait to get home from work so I can play....and then play until bed time...actually I've gone to bed an hour or hour and a half past my normal bedtime for the past few weeks because I couldn't stop playing Morrowind.
It's Friday...weekend time....guess what i'll be doing? :D

Heh man, if you like Morrowind, you would LOVE Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic. You might also try Star Wars: Galaxies. It is an online game, but nearly as addictive as Morrowind. Glad you are enjoying this timeless (yet aging) classic :thumb:

So true so true lost many months to Morrowind. Didnīt stop until my journal was 650 pages. That game was surely groundbreaking. My all time fav too all categories the first that could actually beat the feeling of when I first played DOOM 2 (played it before DOOM).
I think I honestly got addicted to it. In the end I just wanted to puke at it after having lived and breed Morrowind for so long. Has never really happened to me like that before being so immersed in a game.
DOOM 2 surely was very immersive when plying it but I could actually stop playing it and not thinking about it. Morrowind was with me night and day even when not playing it.

I know exactly what you mean. I had DREAMS about Morrowind for gosh sakes. It was quite disturbing. But, like all videogame addictions, they eventually die off. . . until the next big thing comes along. I think Sims 2 may be the beginning of my next struggle for freedom from my computer. I can't wait :) :smash:
