Heh, I just posted this because nice ocers came from outpost.com OEM tray processors before in the 2.4b and 2.53b cpus. Maybe you should order one and let us know how it turns out! ;)

G'day!

Does anyone know of a local source for "tray" processors in OZ?

Thanks and cheers

What exactly the benefit of tray CPUs? Do you get to pick the pack date and so forth??..

the only thing thats really special about tray cpus is that a while ago the 2.4b and 2.53b (mine included) tray cpus were pumping out awesome overclockers from the Malaysia plant.

at a time when ppl were praying for 3g we were hitting 3.3 and 3.4ghz on def vcore.

who ended up with a large shipment of those awesome tray overclockers?
outpost.com.

trays = OEM = 1yr instead of 3yr warranty ? or does that only apply to OEM Xeon cpus ?

trays = oem = no warranty other then what the retailer gives you

oems from Intel are usually 1 year warranty, which might as well be no warranty, because I've never had a busted Intel cpu in less than 12 months!

are you sure?

oem chips are warrantied thru the oem ~ the supplier.
if they say 30 days, they mean 30 days.

i dont remember ever hearing of intel giving a warranty on oems at all.
could be wrong tho ;)

Yeah, I've also seen that OEMs are only warranted under the retailer. It's usually a really short time period. (30-90 days)

But then again, is there really any difference between the tray and retail procs other than it has no box or HSF?

there is no difference at all.

my 2.53b is an outpost.com tray cpu.

actually there is a bit more to this.....

if you take a good look at the intel specfinder page it will tell what steppings have recently been released and their packaging type.
a little deductive reasoning may get you a D1 stepping 533fsb chip!

a good example of this is something that happened about 4 months ago.
i realized that the only tray 2.26b cpus available were C1 steppings.
outpost.com had tray 2.26b cpus :deviltail
me and ErikeaenLogic took a chance and ordered 2.
got them in a few days and they were indeed C1 steppings.
unfortunately there werent from the plant we were hoping they came from (L), and they werent great overclockers.

but we were right that they were C1s. if they woulda been good chips we woulda been running 3.4g 200fsb low vcore on air 4 months ago :-)

it was worth the gamble :deviltail

What's with everyone wanting Malay... :sigh:

But why exactly would you want something like a 2.4B D1 step CPU? I mean most people have moved over to the 800MHz FSB platform if they get new chips. They have HT and their speeds go down pretty low, 2.4GHz, which isn't all that expensive. The advantage before was getting a 2.26B C1 which was quite a bit less than the much more common 2.66B C1 say.

I guess that's what you're talking about...

at the time the L chips were rocking 3.4g on def vcore.
Q chips were doing very well too, 3.1-3.2g on default.

im sure its become obvious to you buy now i have become the underdog overclocker.

win98se/nv4600/533fsb chips/6ns ddr

you might even say that i am a budget overclocker now too
im not going 800fsb.

lol, and you're still doing wicked! :D

But you've got a DC 800FSB mobo...;)

Hmm, ok, well my local retailer gives 1 year on Intel OEMs, but those were P3s, and they don't carry OEM P4.

Don't know about Outpost.com, but Fry's there B&M store gives 1 year warranties on all the OEM procs I've bought from them.

hey yea outpost does give a 1 year warranty ~ didnt realize that.

Intel Pentium 4 2.4GHz, 512K 800 FSB Socket 478 Hyper Threading Tray Processor

Intel Pentium 4 Socket 478 :
Outpost #: 3650545
CPU Speed:2.4GHz
Cache: 512KB
Bus Speed: 800 MHz
Tray Processor only
1 Year Limited Warranty

its not an intel warranty tho ~ its a retailer warranty and they will vary from retailer to retailer.

very generous of outpost tho
