32 Bit Data Transfer

Why is the default on most hard drives set to disable 32 bit data transfer? What are the pitfalls for enabling it?

Where you seeing this?, how is it enabled/disabled?

In the BIOS under the specific drive...you know where you enable SMART and that kinda thing.
