I have a computer located in the basement that is connected to the LAN network in my house. The computer is on at all time, sort of a server thing. I manage it by using remote desktop connection.
Now is there any way to connect to this computers desktop from any internet connected computer? Do i have to set up some port forwarding on the router or something?

Hello Randknu,
Yes there sure is....forward port 3389 on your router..internal and external to the IP address of the computer you want to access remotely. I do this here at home. If I want to manage a different machine.....just change the IP that the port is forwarded to and make sure that RDC is set to accept incoming requests.
The remote authorization is in the System properties (CP > System or Right click My Computer and choose properties...there is a remote Tab)
The only thing you will need is your external IP....just go to www.whatismyip.com if you don't already know.
I use www.noip.com and their free updater daemon to give me a sort of psuedo domain name so I can always find home, even if the router / modem has bounced and my IP changed. I just leave the updater app running on my server and it updates every 15 min....so I am only ever 15 min away from being able to access my system :)
Hope that helps

I use real VNC, many remotes can be opened at same time, I can acces any comp on my network from anywhere, I set my router to always give same IPs and like OCZ rider a noip.com to make sure i find it from anywhere else, VNC is free and simple here's the download. http://www.realvnc.com/products/free/4.1/download.html
