From what I have seen it has to remain with the original motherboard if it is OEM. Any other components can be changed except that to pass validation. Correct me if I am wrong someone?

no you can make it work...if it's a full OEM version. Go to microsofts website and search for how to make an SP2 slipstream CD. Follow the instructions and install the slipstream on your new rig. Then when you have to activate windows...you will have to call the number on your screen that will come up as the old KEY wont be any good. When you call them ....just tell them you had a harddrive failure and you replaced it....then they will give you a new CD key :thumb:....YOU MUST HAVE THE ORIGINAL KEY CODE!!! :yup:

They are usually pasted on the top your case or in the owner's manual.

I have an OEM XP Pro and I've changed motherboards 3 times and didn't have a problem. Just had to call to activate... used the original CD key that came with it... don't know why others have problems...
