The G7 is better mate.
Higher sensor resolution, better precision, Wi-Fi ( 802.11 ) connectivity ( MX1000 = Fast RF ) [ radio frequencies ]...
I'd go for the G7 all the way :)

I thought the G7 was the CORDED laser? Anyway i just bought the G5 and I love it! I tried the Mx518 over the 510 I had already and there was no diff. to purchased it over the 510. But the action on the G5 and its features (the weights) are awesome. I recommend. 3 thumbs up!

G7 is basically an improved MX1000. It has the same amount of DPI (I think). However, it uses two lithium ion batteries instead of one inside the body. So you can switch out the batteries anytime you want.
The G7 uses a 2.4GHZ usb receiver also to improve signal frequency and tracking (I heard).
Btw, I have the MX700 also, and it does act up. :(

I have used the MX518 for a while now and liked it. Just this weekend I bought the G7 and I like it but I didnt like the cordless part that much. It seemed to be not as accurate as a cord one. I am going to exchange it for the G5 today. My friend has the G5 and says he really likes it alot over the MX518. I will soon see myself :)

Report back when you get it, then tell us how things are going with the new mouse

I've had the G7 for a week and I like it, but there is some issues, battery life is about 2 full days then you have to switch battery's, the up and down buttons just below the scroll wheel for the dpi change seem to get in the way, I seem to hit them and change dpi, pain in the but. 2000dpi on a large screen is great but it does take a little time to get use to, I'm calling Logitech tomorrow about the battery life and see what they have to say....

Wouldnt you get interferance between the mouse, a WIFI router, and your cordless phone (if you have a 2.4GHz Cordless)?

I did get the G5 today and I like it better than the G7. But a little problem is that I like to use a mat (pad) for the mouse and the one I have says its for optical mice and I guess their right! The laser one wont work at all on it but my MX518 is perfect. I use the G5 on the desk or a old plain mouse pad and it works great. I will just go get a better pad for the G5. But I do like it better.
