I went over to assist my bro with his new sony dvd camcorder (records to 3" dvd's) the camera has a USB 2.0 interface. We installed the drivers and then plugged in the camera to one of the usb ports on the front of the case (computer is one I built). Windows XP picked up that a device was connected but told us that it was unrecognized and installation could not continue. We messed around for a bit, reinstalling drivers and searching the web to no avail and it was late so I left. At the time my brother mentioned that maybe we could try hooking it up to one of the back panel usb ports. The computer is in a tight spot which makes it difficult to access the back panel, that and I didn't think it should matter where we plugged it in so I told him it didn't make a difference. To cut to the chase, I called him back and said that maybe he should try plugging in the back and this resolved the problem. I have tried to read up on USB 1.1/2.0 compatibility but my reading has not really made things much clearer for me. I understand the speed differences and that a 2.0 device plugged to a 1.1 port *should* work, albeit at a slower speed, and that plugging a 1.1 device into a 2.0 port will work but at also 1.1 speeds. The usb cabling standards are supposed to be the same between versions just 2.0 has different shielding requirements. What I'm confused on is the case front panel usb connections. The case in question is an Antec with 2 front panel usb ports, what is it about these ports that would cause the camcorder not to be recognized? My feeling is that the front ports are usb 1.1 and that the camera/drivers require a usb 2.0 connection to operate correctly - I just don't know how to positively identify that this is what's happening. I will double check my case wiring and try some 1.1 devices in the front ports also next time I go over.
