Just posted a review of the $215 Athlon64 3000+ at AnandTech. Same speed as the 3200+, half the cache, and most of the performance. Compared it to 3.2, 3.0, 3200+, and FX51 in a complete set of benchmark tests.

You can catch the review at http://www.anandtech.com/cpu/showdoc.html?i=1937

That's another excellent review prometheus, and the chip looks very juicy. I realize that with the limited oc'ing tests you were able to do that you don't have a clear picture on how the Newcastles will OC, but do you have any unofficial thoughts on the matter? Do you feel you were limited more by the chip or by the board? :)

Well done, I have to admit a bit of jealousy that you're able to play with this...;):p:D

Can't wait to see this chip perform on a SiS755 mobo. ;)

I actually have the ECS 755 board, but after my initial testing they are making some changes and releasing a Revision B, which I will review. For an $80 board the performance was excellent, but Enthusiast BIOS options were pretty limited and performance was tweaked too conservative for my taste.

The Soltek I used for the review was pretty basic, but 2 BIOS revisions have turned it into a very good A64 that will also sell at a reasonable price. It has multipliers, decent voltage ranges, good memory tweak options now, and is a stable overclocker.

Heh, story of my life...I ordered one of the ECS boards on Saturday...figured what the heck for $72. :beat:

Prom,

Very good review as allways. I love how that 3000+ keeps up with 3.2 in some of the gaming benchies:)

Prom....

NIce review and all, but no offense I find most P4 reviews lame....Where are the test that take advantage of HT??? I mean I use tons of apps on my PC right now that have definite advantages of HT even in single app mode yet reviewers pass over it...Why??? Is it you guys feel it is unfair cause iNtel has it and not AMD??? I think you don't show Intel its true light.

I like the fact you had an encoding app and specview, however I would have done a audio and mpeg2, as well as run more easy to understand results such as POVRAY 3.5 or Cinebench2003 for CAD rendering...then ofcourse more then half is tied up in gaming (which HT doesn't benefit) and synthetic crap.....

I just feel the conclusions drawn when comparing to the 3200+ for the definite price advantage is correct, but I think the comparison to an intel 3.0 or 3.2ghz is premature....No one really test them...I think the advantages of HT and the Intel P4 is ignored and I think that is a shame when ppl are throwing words around like fastest desktop cpu or athlon64's are better then P4s...

How come no one runs multi-tasking apps??? I multitask a bit....I render or encode while I still capture a TV program or what a DVD. Usually connected to the interent at same time downloading some crappy program by futuremark....

I like your reviews as they are very professional...I would just like your answers as why p4 vs athlon64 reviews are ran this way....I am tired of reviews being 50% gaming when not all ppl game with their PC...

Again no offense, but this is whay I did my HT testing review awhile back and it still seems as no one is going to do it...

same thought came across my mind. where's the multi-task testing... i have up to 20+ IE 6 browser windows open at times, 35 processes running in task manager along with trillian pro and other stuff on my work pcs all P4s hehe

Good points about HT, but to me the more important question, and frustration, is our inability to run 64-bit benchmarks on a 64-bit OS. Surely you don't expect HT to matter more than 64-bit processing in the long run? I am amazed A64 does as well as it does in 32-bit benchmarking.

Heck run some LInux testing then...I have seen many rendering and CAD apps that in both Intel and AMD do better....

I don't think 64bit is going to be as big as HT or vice versa in most apps....It really is going to be a seesaw back and forth....I have read reports that say there may be little increases and then seen reports that say the opposite....

one thing we need to live in the real world right now....Can Joe consumer buy the athlon64 with a 64bit Microsoft OS?? NO...So you don't test it....Can he buy Linux??? yes so lets test it and see what kind of apps benefit from the 64bits and in systems with 512mb to 1gb of system ram....

Just to let everyone know, the MSDN AMD64 WinXP prerelease is out now. This chip/platform is very tempting now.

Nice review Prom! :)

I have the older build but it's not of much to use due to lack of 64-bit drivers.

Duvie, I have TurboLinux 8 for AMD64 but what can I test with it? About the only thing I could test would be Oracle 9i and it's going to take some time for me to get Oracle 9i installed on that distro. Of course, another thing to factor for me to test is that I would be using a dual Opteron system instead of the Athlon64 procs and my Opterons are slow.

Oh, I almost forgot-I'm also a licensed owner of the professional Sandra 2004 for AMD64.

If you have a nvidia card at least you have a beta set of drivers for the 64bit OS to try out

Won't be long before 64-bit drivers come out from major vendors I think. The only thing holding me back from buying right now is that current motherboards do not have AGP/PCI locking. Gotta wait for SIS775 or revisions of VIA/nForce3s.

I actually had the FX5900 on this system, loaned the card out to an individual and when I got it back the card was broken. I fortunately, had purchased the card at Best Buy and I got the card back on 29th day of the 30 day return policy period. Since the FX5900 was gone from the shelves at BB at that time I returned the card. Replaced it with ATi 9500 Pro I had. It has now been replaced with an ATi AIW 9800 Pro. ATi only has 64-bit non-beta drivers for the Linux distros which are also non-beta. ATi has not released any 64-bit beta drivers for Windows yet. :(
