They are all different, some have hidden screws like under stickers or in the battery/HDD/memory area to remove as well.
If all else fails, just drop it onto cement from a considerable height, should gain you access to anything inside. ;)

Yes Flex, you should just have to start removing certain screws from the bottom to get the laptop to come apart....some screws may not have to come out, but most will.
Be sure to check for hidden screws behind the panels where you add ram, etc.

Best thing to do is start removing all drives, batteries, etc. Most laptops also require you to remove the lcd assembly also, it usually has screws on the back, sometimes the hinges have plastic covers that snap on. Be very careful, a lot of it will most likely be just snapped together and you need to remove it correctly to avoid breaking stuff. Ususlly there is a piece between the top of the keyboard and the lcd that snaps on, it hides the connection to the lcd. I always remove all the drives, etc., the lcd, the keyboard and then just start taking screws out. I repair a lot of loose power connectors on laptops, which is probably what you are getting into with the loose jack, after time the connection gets loose do to pulling on the cable. It will require complete removal of the motherboard, the jack will have broken solder joints and you willl need to resolder them..... Have fun :D

flex. make sure you get the drivers and all tht from the Compaq website, and for that specific laptop. In example, go to Compaq for those drivers first, NOT to SIS.

That error....is it more of a question? like...do you want to update P&P drivers?
Also...make sure the audio is enabled in the bios?
Does Windows see the Audio controller? meaning...is there an exclamation in Device Manager saying that no driver is installed?

Is the SIS drivers package an .exe? If not, maybe you can try a manual update through device manager, by choosing update on sound driver and then manually browse to .inf files in the DL'd SIS drivers folder from there?

flex, another thing. I have noticed on the laptops I work on occassionaly that certain drivers you would think aren't related to each other actually are. So just make sure the drivers for all toher major devices are appropriately installed and updated too i.e. display, USB, etc. Could be OS is detecting potential incompatibility between another device driver and the one you are trying to update...

@RYDER-no , it's more of a statement. It's a little box that pops up and says"severe, update plug and play driver" but, i just went back to compaq's site and found another driver. it looked as if it was installing then an error popped up saying "driver not found". WTF!!!
@JM- Yes it has the yell caution marks in device manager, and yes i trie to manually install as well...nothing worked :irk:

I'm going to stick with you here as long as I can, but forgive me b/c I may have to bail on you at any moment...
What is the specific Compaq model, not just the series but the actual model number off the back of the one you are working on?
