See this post... I wrote it but I don't know if it applies to what you are doing...
It involves renaming the .vob to .mpg

It's close to what I need. Here's what I'm trying to do.
I rented the Farscape Season 1 DVDs. I don't want to copy the DVDs because that would be 100% illegal. The DVDs contain more than just the shows but using DVD Decrypter I was able to determine which VOB files contain only the show and none of the special extras on the DVD. AFAIK, this is like recording the show on the Sci-fi channel, except I don't have cable. I can download the shows through bit-torrent even. It's just that since I can rent the DVDs, I was hoping for an easier solution than downloading the shows. I would think this to be fair to do since I'm only trying a different means to get what others can get through other media. I hope it is. :( I can play the VOB files on my ATi video cards if I have the DVD player by ATi installed. I like the quality of the playback and really only want the shows since I don't know how long it will be before the shows are available to record on the TV for us non-cable users.
I wonder if this will work: http://www.yasasoft.com/magicdvdripper/
If what I'm trying to do is illegal then delete the thread and I will just download the eposides. I certainly don't want to do something illegal.

What is your final format going to be? VCD, DVD, DIVX? I'm really not the best person to try and answer this and most of the stuff I've done (which ain't much) I've pretty much fumbled my way through. Are you dealing with having to combine portions of separate .vob's? Have you tried TMPGenc? There are tons of tutorials out there for that. I know I'm not being much help here

I was actually thinking of trying TMPEnc tonight for this. That app is a lot like Linux when I was starting to learn Linux back in the 90's. Very few good books and plenty of Internet information. I just happen to like having a book though.
I don't even care if I can get the VOB files stringed together as one big mpeg. Those breaks could be considered commerical breaks. :p
Final format can be mpeg or avi-whatever gives me the highest quality playback. I happen to have a DivX Pro license on one of my computers thanks to using ShowShifter Pro for one of my tuners.

Hey I have done this numerous of times...
use DVD2AVI to make a D2v file...It will separate the video and audio for you...just open the vob file or files you want and use forced film (23.97fps)...
then take the tmpgenc and open a d2v file and encode the video...
Use one of the numerous programs to convert the ac3 to a wav or mpeg2 audio standrad and then join them using te mpegtools portion of tmpgenc....
DVD2AVI on my computer can take like 2 to 4minutes for an entire movie to it is quick...

Thanks Duvie. I got as far as TMPGenc. :(
I use DVD2AVI like you said and then I used Headache to convert the sound to a wave file.
But TMPGenc does not like it. Freezes the 'puter completely once it reaches 4%. Did a playback of what I did get for 4% and noticed the sound is not in sync with the picture. :(

What version of DVD2AVI??? Make sure the avisynth file is up to date as well....
Use the muxing or combining of the audio/video files in Virtualdub...there yo can interleave the audio back in and use the delay the DVD2avi fle specifies in the title of the file....
IE (projct name) AC3 TO1 3_2ch 448Kbps DELAY (x)ms.ac3
Whatever x is you want to type that i the appropriate box in the interleaving sections and it should synch it just fine....
Also make sure in TMPGenc you use the 3:2 pulldown when playback under the Video menu subsection Encode mode....
Also make sure frame rate is 23.976fps (internally 29.97 fps)

Thanks Duvie. I finally figured out what was wrong. I apparently cannot overclock this system - it does not like encoding otherwise. Fortunately this system has a 3.0c in it so I only lost 300Mhz. I'm using an EIDE drive for the OS, one drive on the ICH5R for DVD2AVI and then another drive on the ICH5R for TMPEnc to read the d2v file and encode to this other drive.
Now that I see what the mpeg quality is like, I think I would rather have a different quality. The mpeg took a total of 2.2GB of VOB files down to a 500Meg file. I don't need the compression since I will burn these files to DVD. What can I use to string together the VOB files or what else is there to keep the quality?

Well I have routinely done mpeg2 n The Two Towers and my final m2v file is much larger then the percentage you have...if you theoretically set it to 2 pass and run it up to max 8mbits per second you should virtually have same file size...your settings are too low and thus you are cutting quality...
try to see what Ifoedit can do for you...maybe it will blend vob files for you and create the necessary ifo and bup files you willl need...
I guess I may be lost in what it is you are doing....I need to reread a bit...
Ok I got it...
Go get the program dvdshrink3.0.....take that place in the DVD and have it analysis the drive with the dvd in it...hit author and then just pic the vob or special features you want and hit backup....It will rempa the vobs and the ifo and bup files....heck keep the menus and just drop the movie that way you keep the interactiveness of the menus for selecting the stuff you wish to watch....
