I'm using a Samsung DVD+/- RW that will burn CDs fine but locks up when I try to burn DVDs. Will reach Caching of Files Started on Nero, but then lock. I've RMA'd the drive but the replacement behaves the same way.
Tech support says it's Abit's Ultra Bus Master Driver, (it's an Abit KV8 Pro mobo) and that I should remove it in the Add/Remove Control panel. When I do, though, the system restarts several times and then gives the opportuinity for a Last Known Good boot. I've updated the Via 4in1 drivers as well.
I've tried different media and once I was able to burn a data dvd using the trial version of Alcohol 120%, but I think I should be able to burn using the bundled Nero, and not have to buy another $50 piece of software.
 Any suggestions for what to try next would be greatly appreciated.

Did you go to the Nero site and download the latest Drive support file? Perhaps the bundle shipped with an older version and the drive is not supported yet. (which I would LMAO at since the software came with the drive...kinda stupid if samsung didn't make sure the drive was supported in the bundle they shipped  )

Check to see if you have the latest firmware flashed to that Samsung drive. If you cannot find latest firmware at Samsung then Google around for your specific model number and the words "latest" and "firmware" and "download" and you should be able to at least confirm whether or not you have the latest firmware. Good chance you can DL the latest one too if you need it.
Also, DL this (ftp://ftp6.us.nero.com/Nero-6.6.0.16.exe) - the latest NERO update patch as of this post. Even though you have the bundle it will still update what you've got (assuming it is any incarnation of NERO version 6).

Tech support is almost for sure correct.
I've noticed several thread on various forums with people having the same issue, & in every case, it's due to the lovely VIA chipset/IDE controller drivers.
I've also had it happen to me, & the only way i could fix it was to reformat & reinstall fresh chipset drivers.
I believe VIA has a very crappy IDE controller driver or whatever, & it gets corrupted easily somehow.
I am willing to bet that if you go into your device manager under IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers & select the IDE controller your DVD burner is hooked up to, you will not be able to see the advanced settings tab where it normally would be.
That's because somehow the drivers are fux0red.
Reformat, & you'll be back in business.
And next time you get a mobo, avoid VIA chipsets (I learned the hard way ;))

Thanks for your suggestions. I tried to flash the firmware, but that failed as well. I've been trying to avoid a reformat by just reinstalling or updating the drivers, but it's looking like I'm just postponing the inevitable.
The Abit KV8 Pro was a well-reviewed board at a reasonable price when I was doing my research, but I may be avoiding VIA chipsets in the future.

Ok, so I did a fresh install this weekend with fresh chipset drivers and guess what? SAME PROBLEM. Also, not sure if this is related, but when I try to rip MP3s (using CDex), all I get is silence for the length of the track. Related?
Any additional suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Have you tried plugging it into a different port (especially on a different controller) or switching ide cables? If you have a SATA adapter try running it on a SATA port.
