I have a 200gig Maxtor DiamondMax10 16MB buffer HDD installed in my new system

AMD X2 3800+
1gig OCZ Golden Edition Gamers Extreme memory (2-2-2-5)
OCZ Powerstream 520watt PSU
Asus A8N Premium nForce4 SLI Mobo

Ok so I have the HDD hooked up with a SATA cable, its not setup for RAID. I install windows xp pro fine, a driver or 2, then after a couple reboots Windows will hang. I'll reboot after it stalls, and the HDD isn't there anymore. Its not listed in the BIOS, it doesn't show up when the comp boots up, nothing. For all intensive purposes, it doesn't exist. So I have to unplug it, reboot, let the memory test run, power off the system, plug the HDD back in, and its readable again. 3 installations later the same thing happens. A few drivers, Windows hangs, I reboot, HDD is still plugged in but doesn't exist. WTF!!!!!!!!!1!1!!111!!1!!!!!!eleven!!1!!!111

Is my HDD screwed? what the hell is going on? :smash: :bonk:

My setup is older than yours (Barton on a DFI with sil3114 sata) but I remember having some issues with a single sata drive attached. There was a bios setting in the regular mainboard bios for sata or raid that was initially set wrong, but the big thing was that silicon image had two different drivers for Windows. One was raid, one non-raid. I accidentally loaded the raid version and it worked - kind of - I had some weird problems, I don't really remember now what they were, but installing the non-raid version fixed them.

Do you have the latest bios revision for your mobo?

Does Maxtor have any diagnostics you can run on the drive?

Can you run Windows for a bit before you start loading drivers to see if it is really tied to the driver loading? (Seems strange that a windows driver would effect the BIOS seeing the hard drive)

Just my last generation opinion... hope you get it sorted.

wiggle the cables in the back of the drive and at the MB too, might have lost the connection.

Actually sodface, that sounds familiar. I do notice seeing something about SATARaid BIOS already installed. Where can I find normal SATA drivers?
