Some interesting handles around here.
What's the meaning/significance of your user name?

pointreyes
11-17-2003, 06:16 PM
Just this past week a person was shocked that my username is not related to computers. I happen to love this location called Point Reyes. It is a park north of SF in CA. I actually moved to the west coast due to Point Reyes. It is a beautiful place that takes you away from the cities of CA. It can be rugged or pristine.

sodface

My mom's british (mum!) - she used to call us kids sodfaces when we were being little sh!ts. One of the very first things I did online was play links ls golf on kali and also case's ladder - It was the first thing I ever had to choose a handle for. I thought Sodface went pretty well with the golf thing and also had a double meaning for me from my childhood. Then I used it for ICQ, and from then on for pretty much everything else.

Keri
06-27-2004, 02:50 AM
Ok, Time to fess up! "Keri" is not my LEGAL name.....I won't tell it in open forum since I hate my legal name even though it's somewhat common, normal & some people like it. I don't!

15 years ago I started a career in broadcasting. Working from the smallest Radio Station I could find that would hire me right out of college. I went by the name "Rob Snow" and known as the Hollywood Hitman! :o

As I moved up to a larger Radio Station and then the biggest stations in the area I became Keri James. Mostly because people said I looked like Kerry Von Eric (Wrestler of old) and a very close friend that I lost when I was 19 named james. That plus it was short and easy to say. ;)

That stuck with me in Radio for about 10 years and everyone called me Keri, Even off air. I liked the name and the recognition and when I had kids.....They were neamed Carrie & James!

I have been "Keri" ever since and even my Sam's Club card says Keri. I can cash checks made out to Keri and my email addys have Keri in them.

I don't intend to ever stop using it, I may even change it legally one day. The only reason I never have is because it would have hurt my moms feelings. She has moved to a better place since 3 years ago and now I may consider it.

I'll try Abraham :hide: :D .

Everyone knows the term Snafu and Murphy's Laws. I've always liked both. Could be the pessimistic side of me but it's not to reflect pessimism. Sh_t usually happens when messing about and I like the challenge and the occassional banging my head on the wall too ( :coocoo: ). So I like it when it's situation normal all f----- up. Life would be too much of a drag if everything went the way you wanted it to everytime.

Paladin
07-08-2004, 08:08 PM
Belive it or not, Paladin was a name given to me by all my friends. They all seemed to notice certain things I did, like holding doors for people or the fact that I have trouble lying/using swear words in normal coversation, or then theirs those times that I''d stand up for someone that was about to be beaten by several angry Peers (To no fault of his own, they just didn't like his shirt or something). Oh yeah, And I'd always win, cause I had the size/skill/strength advantage... good ol' Genetics :)

glorfy
09-25-2004, 10:48 PM
When I was at Polytechnic, I was a member of a science fiction/fantasy society. I suppose its quite mundane now that we've had the films, but Tolkien was one of my favourite fantasy writers (especially the silmarillion - very dark) - of course Glorfindel was an Elf Lord who slew a Balrog (Am I sad or what) - but I thought that was a bit TOO pretentious, so when I played LPMud, I became 'Glorfy'. Incidently, I had to set up a new Email account the other day. Someone already had Glorfy (of course) - so I became 'Glorfy-Be' - I think you can guess where that came from - but I kinda like it and I think it may stick!

EDIT

I forgot to say, bo one seemed to realise at the time, but I like to use irony. Glorfindel is a tall golden haired elf lord.... Im' just not! LOL.

Shayd
09-25-2004, 10:58 PM
I started using the handle Shayd many moons ago now. It was my handle when I was playing NetMech in Clan Pendragon. I would always try to shadow someone and peck away at them, hence the name being a play on words of shade/shadow. Must be 10 years now I have used it. Always annoys me when someone is using 'MY' name
Oh well, that is when I use Shaydi :p

boshuter
09-26-2004, 12:03 PM

well, my username is pretty simple to work out, i am known as jim or jimbo to most (no prizes for guessing what my real name is), and one thing lead to another, and some of my friends starting calling me jimboss, so i have adopted it as my name for forums and the like.

XII
10-24-2004, 04:46 AM
Well, my nick is quite simple.
About the age of 13, my dad bought a PC, 8086, and only a little bit of software. The rest had to do with C64. :na: :na: :na:
A few guys, also having a PC, organised copy sessions, and naming ourselves I to XXI. This was in the time, modums ran at max 3400B. We al used BBSes, to Dwnl software, as it was very expensive and hard to get, esp. here in Holland.
I ended up with XII. There are only 3 members stil active: IV, IX, and me, XII.

Killer Munkey
12-09-2004, 09:44 AM
To be honest i don't remeber when or how i came up with the name Killer Munkey. I know it started up before Dialbo II came out cause i set it as my email address some time before that. I wanted killermonkey origionally because it sounded mean and scary. Nothing scarier than a rabid monkey that throws it own crap at you but that was taken. The first variation i wanted, Killermunkey, was open so i took that.

ever since i've used it in multiplier games and forums. half the time most people just shorten it to KM which is fine with me

everybody else has a interesting background concerning their names too. thanks for all the stories

1Avatar
12-09-2004, 11:57 AM
I used to play Starcraft back in the day and always had a hidden army or built in such a way that most people wrote me off in the game, then all of a sudden, the map would "move" as I pretty much blitzed the other team or saved my team mates that thought we were done for. So a lot of people started calling me Avatar, always there, but never noticed it until it counted - kinda stuck actually because I ended up using the name as part of my consulting company :)

Let's see... Used this Screen Name for a very long time. Use it on every messenger and email address. I used to go by Wicked Peanut in my days of school.. I ran several BBs' mostly Wildcat stuff. Remember using 300, 500 baud modems then the 1200.. We came along way. Eventually grewup or atleast I think I did. Depends who you ask and opened a computer store/repair place named Commotion's.... So Wicked Commotion was born. Been building computers for a long time and deal with Amd and Intel.. But having major problems with a certain Prescott 478... My own. Too Hot. By hey I'll take care of it one way or another... Can you say Vapochill....lol BE is a great place and great people. By far the best forums I've ever visited since using any connection. Propellorhead
12-22-2004, 02:52 PM
I've had a thing for BMW's since my folks first got one when i was 7. As some of you may know, the roundel on a BMW's bonnet is actually a spinning propellor (in the colours of the Bavarian Flag) Which came from originally being an aircraft engine manufacturer(sorry I'm a geek). Thus the name.

AceGoober
12-22-2004, 05:17 PM
My name goes back a long way with me.

I am a computer 'enthusiast' in the most straightforward of terminology. I run a private computer business on the side from my primary 8 to 5 job. My main skills involve tuning hardware to run at the fastest it was made to run at stock speeds. I match hardware with what people use then tweak it for the best performace without overclocking. About 15 or more years ago, people started calling me Ace for my abilities with computers. The name stuck ever since.

I like to make people laugh. It doesn't matter if it is a good or bad joke/guesture/comment. As long as it brings a smile to someone, then that is what really matters. Several years ago, many of my friends (online and off) started calling me a Goober when I made some off the wall comment or joke. And that stuck as well.

When I started playing online games (1200 baud modem days  ), I needed a name to fit me. I ran with a few such as BoneHead, Sceptic (more on that one later), FishBag, Lard (to name a few) but wanted something that fit me. And that is when I fit 2 and 2 together to get AceGoober.

I have been known by this for a long, long time and I believe it fits me well. It relates to my abilities with computers and the fact that I believe everyone needs laughter in their life. It doesn't matter what type of day a person has had. Even a badly repeated joke has a little bit of humorous value to it. One of the squads I am with even dedicated a forum to me (2nd frame, 3rd down):

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v210/AceGoober/svdforum.bmp

I usually post there 4 or more times a week with anything that is not deemed offensive to anyone. Only a couple of occasions have I let one slip by :look: and have been called on it.

And now you know why I am called AceGoober. :D

Gbud
01-18-2005, 08:39 PM
Well lets see... When I was playing Duke Nukem 3d on T.E.N., I inhaled an incredible amount of thick rich smoke. I was going by another name at the time.... But when Quake came round, Gbud came out to play. And although I have not smoked in years, the name remains.

893 is my clan's name... when read in japanese, it's Yakuza; which is the Japanese mafia. The name came from kinda an inside joke between Propellorhead an I. We saw these really scary looking guys driving in a really organized crime looking car... coincidentally, the licensce plate number was 893.
KinkyShot was just a name i came up with while on my vacation in LA. it's any drink that would make a girl do something crazy for you. Sadly... I haven't poured many.

Mount Timpanogos - 2nd highest peak on the Wasatch Front (11,750')

http://www.utahpictures.com/Timpanogos.html

I love the outdoors, and have climbed/hiked most all of the ridges/peaks along the Wastach Front (Utah is a wonderful place for this type of stuff). Timp is one of my favorites. If any of you saw any of the Nordic events of the Winter 2002 olympics, Soldier hollow is at the base of Timpanogos and in the valley in which I live .. as I look out my window ... I look upon this incredible mountain ... Timpanogos

BGP Spook
04-23-2005, 08:40 PM
When I was younger I had the odd bad habit/talent* of sneaking up on people and staring at them. This earned me the nick name of "spook".

I started getting into games and descided to use the nick name spook. Edventually one of my friends thought he saw 'me' online when it wasn't. So I added "BGP"--my initials--for a personal touch.

*I say talent as a jest. I was, however, very good at "spooking" people. Either form sneaking up on them unintentionally or form staring at them--the latter being a bad habit. I have since done away with staring--expect when it is funny and would be taken so--and have reduced the frequency I accidentally sneak up on people.
My Lord I am weird!

Riot at "Pimp of the Year" Awards Linked to Trophy Store Error
Aug 27 2003 by Allen Voivod
An error made by the clerk at Mount 'Em High Trophy Shop in South Atlanta sparked a riot at the 312th Annual "Pimp of the Year" Awards. Miraculously, there were no fatalities, though dozens were injured.

"The best we can figure is, little Matty Ginrod over at Mount 'Em High mixed up the pimps' trophy order with some other order," police lieutenant Robert Cloran said. "It's almost as bad as when he mixed up the Navy SEAL diplomas with the pottery class certificates."

The trouble began almost immediately, as Megan Radburn won the night's first award, for "Phattest Ride." When she failed to appear, the crowd began to get restless. The second award, "Rollin' Hoes for Distance," went to Randy Tennenbaum. Pimps started throwing down left, right and center, then scattered when the SWAT team moved in.

At Fulton General Hospital, the scene descended further into chaos. Arming themselves with crutches, IV poles and sharpened plastic drool trays, a number of pimps tried to settle old scores or blame rival pimps for the awards mishap. The melee spilled out of the emergency room and down the street to the conveniently located Mount 'Em High Trophy Shop, which was then looted in a very orderly fashion.

On the other end of the mix-up, a dozen children aged 18-36 months received their graduation certificates from the "Toddler Tumblers" class at the local YMCA. The plucky kids, including MC Pimpfandango, Dynamite White, Grandmaster Bitchsmacker, and Bling-Bling the Chinese Pimp posed for photos that will be posted on the "Welcome" board at the front desk.

For me Drufuss has no real meaning. When i had to use a nickname this was the first one that popped into my mind.

If you google for it, you may find a DJ somewhere using the same name, but i donŽt know him and he doesnŽt know me. Maybe when heŽs reach and famous sometimes iŽll sue him (or heŽll sue me).

Well you see, my first forum was the official Master of Orion 3 forum. This was a little after I first discovered Master of Orion II, and had been "pwning" the comp with the Psilons on Impossible difficulty level for about 2 weeks. I decided "Hey, its a MoO forum, the Psilons get friggen awesome tech advantages, so I'll name myself Psilon_Tech! Well, after MoO3 disappointed, I wandered the forum waste-lands and I eventually dropped the _, leaving me with my current username, Psilontech! (Too Bad the moo forum died, I was one of the last 'elders' left...)

hmm... it took me a long time to read all those backstories! I am a lazy person, and when i had to come up with a nickname that was the "perfect fit" i decided instead to be lazy :thumb: so i just used Random, thinking that i would stumble upon somthing more apropo later. 4.5 years and i still havent found anything...but i wasnt looking to hard(to much work) so i guess it just stuck :)

on a side note i dont cap "i" because of the lazy thing :yup: and hopefully that wont drive anyone up any walls, especially if they are really tall or spikey at the top

i was later told that Random is very apt because of my ADD, and just generally the way i think and act

08 or um.. 8  is my favorite number

do you have a favorite number? well you should!

i also cant use proper grammer or spell very well....

my name comes from the band Killswitch Engage (http://www.killswitchengage.com/). I was at a LAN a few years ago with my brothers-in-law (they weren't then, but i since roped in their sister :D ), we were playing Medal of Honor, and i chose it b/c before then i was using cap'n jazz (another band), but it just didn't inspire the "shoot you in the face" mentality.

nothing much to it. oh, and the x in the middle stands for straightedge. or it did. i have a beer every now and again, so i can't claim it anymore.

"Bughouse" was the Victorian term for a mental institution, and later came to mean the condition that might land one in such a facility. I started using the handle years ago during a prolonged period of youthful angst. I still use it, though I'm feeling much better now, thanks.

Black as the inside of a coal bin at midnight, he'd disappear in a wink, and saunter back in like he'd taught David Copperfield his tricks. The Magic Man, a source of great solace, a brave soul who made his way through the feline world like John Wayne on steroids :wpleased: It's a tough row living up to that kind of heat.

That's why I'm Magicky

mursaat
01-18-2006, 02:46 AM
Not much story with this name, as its young (less than 1 year). Mursaat are the evil ones in Guild Wars (online MMORPG). Choose it because it sounded good, but has nothing to do with myself :coocoo: . Now with the interesting (well, hmm maybe not  ) part:

Before mursaat I was Momo. I choose it the first time I went to a ciber-cafe, playing Quake 2 (back in '95? can't remember). The people there said "You must choose a name". I though "already have a name xD". But they went "no, an original, cool name". So it was in the time I was reading the Michael Ende book. It sounded good, fast and easy to remember. So I stuck to Momo. Even now everybody calls me Momo (family, friends, even at work).

But I found a lot of times explaining why me (male) was named after a girl's name. Also people was always asking "did you liked the book?" "is this for the car's wheels?". So I got tired and changed it. Also recently I joined a car's forum dedicated to VAG cars, and I thought it was going to be severely linked with this: www.momo.com , and that was not the case.

What do you think? mursaat or Momo? :bonk:

My nick goes back to a name that was given to me in school, I think it was six-pak.

One of the guys in the decision making loved beer and always was looking for a reason to put a beer related nick on a newcomer. My last name gave them an out, it's a stretch, but an out to do something with regard to beer.

I use Syxpack whenever I can on the internet, the spelling is typically not used on internet sites.

On sites that seem to have it before I get there, I use TrueSyxpack.

Aka Zero
10-04-2006, 06:29 PM
From the anime manga series Candidate for Goddess ( or, pilot candidate, originally Megami Kouhosei in japan.)

Main character is Rei Enna, They call him Zero because rei is also 0 in japanese.
Really like the show, and later the manga. Have had it since my first forum going. Also my email has be candidatezeroenna since then too. From the same series. I am did not choose it just becasue it sounded cool like alot of people.

The Aka was Also Known As, being it my online self. But on a free server of Ragnarok online they didn't allow all caps in your name so AKA, became Aka, and so it started being read "Ah-ka" And Aka is red in japanese, so it accidentlly became Red-Zero, Like the japanese red sun. A multi use name.:yup:

Also liked zero becasue as a number it is the unknown force. mutiply anything times zero, and only zero is left.

But call me AKA, Aka, or Zero, whatever you want. :thumb:

NiCu

This thread isn't dead yet! Clear! Bzzzzzzt! We've got a pulse!

NiCu.. And I See You.. What little schooling I did was for computer stuff, with a focus on networks. Since I knew how to work the networks better then most, I could usually see what you were doing. Hence, "and i see you". It's also a song by Phish.

I strayed from this nick for a bunch of years and started using another on and off for a decade or so, but when I got back into tech as a hobby and not just a job, I brought this moniker out of retirement.

DocSavage
07-14-2007, 11:53 AM
About twenty years ago I ran across an interesting book named Doc Savage: The Man of Bronze (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Doc_savage) in a used book store. I bought it, read it, and I was hooked. I spent the next 15 years or so trying to hunt up the rest of the books in the series. I managed to collect about 2/3rds of them before I gave in to reality and realized I would probably not be able to finish the collection. I am still big fan though and wish they would make a TV series based on the books. I did finally manage to read all of the books though thanks to a cd with the entire collection of books in PDF format that I found on eBay.

Just wondering how people came up with either:

A. Forum name
B. Game name

My forum name is also my game name, and here is how I cam up with it.

I used D A V in the old old old arcade games for game name (yes, I know, very original).

When I got my first computer, my first upgrade was a 3dfx video card. I was so proud I actually installed a pc component myself, I had to take part of the name of that component.

So, my name became Dav3d, until I saw somone else using the name in quake 3, and switched it to Dave3d in 2001 or so.

Hey Bo , What bow do you shoot ? shoot in any turny's/compition ? shooting my Bow is also one of my favorite pastimes .

I used to shoot 3D tournaments at least every weekend, sometimes twice on some weekends. The last couple of years I haven't shot as much, usually 3-4 a season to get tuned up for bowhunting season. I tried some indoor NFAA style competition for a couple of years, but really wasn't that good at it and didn't have time to devote to getting good enough to be satisfied. I shoot a Mathews Competition Pro in the mens open class, when I'm shooting to tune up for hunting I shoot my Mathews MQ1 hunting bow in men's release class.

Here is my open class bow...

Then, as people got to know me very well, they insisted that the noob-part was due to be removed, and they just referred to me as Tweak.

So, I started with a handle that I thought reflected my position, and has been refined by my friends at the various forums, to Tweak. Funny thing is, there has been no more suggestions to change it since I finally went with it.
