View Full Version : Modding A TJ06

I would like to add some extra fans to my SilverStone TJ06, one on the side of the case to blow in and one on the top to suck out. I want the one on the side to be a 120mm fan and the one a top the same. I basically have two questions, The first one is about the the side fan. Where would be the best spot to put the fan, or is just centering it in the middle of the clear side of the case enough. For the fan on top of the case, I'm not sure a 120 mm fan would fit or should I go with a smaller fan, possibly a 92mm fan, I don't want to go any lower. The best spot seems the top fan seems to be over the clear area between the HDD rack and the optical drive rack. And ideas or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

I was thinking of adding a 120mm fan to the back in the HDD rack area.

I already have a 120mm fan over my HDD rack, it's on my PSU. The PSU I'm using comes with a 120mm fan, hence my reasoning for putting the other fan behind it.

but the power supply fan pulls the air thru the power supply and dumps it out the back of the case, if your power supply fan faces the front of the case, and you mount a 120mm fan just above it sucking out, you may be robbing air away from the fan that would pull air thru the power supply. If the power supply fan faces down at the HDD rack, then it`s so close to the rack it may be imparing the air flow thru the power supply.

Well, this one of the reasons why I'm asking about this case fan modding. The TJ06 has two small pins attached to the HDD rack so the PSU rests on these pins. That puts about about an inch of space between the top of the HDD rack and the 120mm fan on the bottom of my Modstream PSU. I've never done this type of thing before, and I have a friend who has the tools and the skills to make the necessary cuts. I appreciate you taking the time to answer my post, Rukee. What do ya think, should I just forget about putting a suck hole in the top of the case?

kronos, What temps are you trying to reduce??
If it is general case temps, then just the addition of the side fan and top fan will work. If you have a specific area that you want to cool then the position of the side fan becomes a little more critical. The top fan position is basically limited by where it can be mounted but performance wise, it will work fine.
If you want to experiment with the side fan, grab some cardboard and use it for a temporary case panel. That way you can try different fan positions with out damaging you case

Thanks for the reply, Rotorhead. My idea is just to lower the general case temps. But looking at my case as I type these words, it seems like the best place would to have it centered right in the middle of the side panel, that way it would blow on everthing. The only place that I can see mounting a top fan is right between the HDD rack and the optical drive rack.
There is another reason I'm thinking along these lines, I'm an old Sword & Sorcery fan from way back and when I san this fan grill (http://www.xoxide.com/flaming-sword-120mm-hand-painted-fan-grill.html) at xoxide.com I thought it would look awesome on the side of my case.

That fan grill is pretty sweet. :thumb:
It would look good in the center.
Is there enough open space between the upper section and the lower section to allow for good airflow?
Also a good fan for the side would be a Panaflow as they are designed to push the air out in a cone shape. This would distribute the air out over the motherboard.

Now that you mention it, Rotorhead, the upper fan probably won't get very good airflow. The space between the HDD rack and the optical rack has all the wires from the PSU and my optical drive and floppy going through it. That would pretty much block any airflow I guess.

Ok, how about one of those slot coolers in your upper most PCI slot. I think there are some with around 40cfm, not a lot of flow...but
I don't know how well this would work, but because of the lay out of the TJ-06 at laest it would be at the top of the lower section, and you would have to find one that blows out the back through the PCI cut out.

I`d like to come up with some sort of PCI slot card that sucked outside air and had a tunnel that connected to the VC fan inlet so the VCs got cool outside case air.

May be a good slot cooler here: Link (http://www.svc.com/fsc-190-42.html).
I've been wanting to try it, but from the pictures it looks like it would draw air from underneath, not from video card?
And for Rukee there's this one: Link (http://www.svc.com/vcool.html). No tunnel and not much air flow though.
Oh, and look at this one:Link (http://www.voyeurmods.com/index.php?action=item&id=1368&prevaction=category&previd=7&prevstart=0).

THOSE *********S STOLD MY IDEA!!!!! :!:
Man, didn`t take them long to market it eithter, I just posted for crying out loud. :bonk:

I'm afraid a slot cooler isn't an option for me. Even with my mobo inverted in the TJ06, the AN8 Ultra only has three PCI slots. One of them is covered by my Sapphire X850, the second is taken up by my dail-up modem ( :rotflmao: yes, my dail-up modem), The third is at the very top of the area under the HDD rack, so I don't see how one would fit.
