I'm trying to help a guy get his system set up for running 3dmark01 and he has windows 2000 with direct x 8.1. He can't get the 4.12 or 5.1 catalyst drivers to install, keeps getting an INF error. The new drivers will instll just fine, just not the older ones. Anyone know a reason for this? I can get more info if needed.

Try downloading the Omega drivers. Also, boot into safemode and do a complete driver cleaning, get rid of ALL evidence of previous drivers.

This problem is on a fresh install of 2k, it was encounterd at the initial driver install with the 4.12's, then the 5.1's gave the same inf error... so far the only drivers that install ok are the new 5.7's...

Bad download perhaps? Maybe some conflict with the ATi drivers and the default drivers that come with Windows.

I really don't know yet... it's not a bad download, he can install them in XP just fine. I'm trying to find out more info now, like what service pack he's using, etc. So far the only drivers he has any luck installing are the new 5.7's.. to me that's strange, I'd think the older ones would install in 2k easier than the new ones..

Is he trying to install the drivers only? Have him try and install the control panel first and then the driver. Do a restart after installing the cp. To tell you the truth I think I still haven't done a true 2k and 8.1 drive yet. :o

LOL.... well I haven't either :D I did install it on my hard drive and didn't have any problems installing 8.1 or the older cats, but my hard drive was dying so I never got to really see what it would do. This guy is running an A64 system and the only problem he's having is not being able to install the older cats :coocoo:

I'm getting a new 74gig raptor to test alongside a Seagate 15k.4 scsi very soon and will try it again on those drives.... I know if I can get a good working 2k install it will help my '01 scores

I just did a fresh 2K install on my sons system, and to install the latest ATI drivers, I had to hav Service Pack 4 and DX9 installed.
