View Full Version : Gulp! I have reached 1TB!

I did this unknowingly. Completely unexpected.
I at first ended up with 920Gig of storage about a month ago and as of tomorrow I will have over 1TB of storage.
Linux file server: 4 x 80Gig - RAID 5 - 320 Gig (however due to RAID5, it will appear to be only 240Gig).
Dual Opteron: 74Gig + 120Gig - 194 Gig
Canterwood 1: 2 x 120Gig - RAID 0 - 240 Gig
Canterwood 2: 2 x 160Gig - RAID 0 - 360 Gig <correction> 320 GB [thanks dbwillis :) ]
That's 994 GB if I don't count the 80 Gig drive in the RAID5. However, with all the drives I do have 1,074 GB of potential storage.
:look: And no, I am not addicted to computer hardware. I'm not I tell you. Not, not, not, not. :look:

Whoops.
However, you miscalculated as well. :p
The total (not counting the 80Gig drive in the RAID5) totals to 994 GB. So without the 80GB drive I cannot reach 1TB. However, that 80GB drive is being used for r/w processing so I'm still over 1TB. :)

If you seen all the partitions I have you would get dizzy from trying to add all them up. :D
I think most people just add up the advertised size the of drive. If not, I will just have to get an external 80 Gig drive. :p

Oh gee. I completely forgot about mp3! I'm going to need to get more drives! :D
Actually I have something like 5 mp3 files total. However, I will be getting a load of VCR tapes loaded on the 'puter and then move them over to DVD format. And I have a load of backup images to contend with. However, finally having a DVD burner does make storage easier to handle.

If I had porno with that much storage being used for it-I would be hosting it. Make some $$$ on it. :deviltail :D

Thanks for the welcome, eva2000. I would probably have more storage but decided to get that U320 SCSI drive (Seagate Cheetah 74Gig 15k3). Wonderful drive, wish I could afford a RAID0 with Cheetah on a LSI RAID PCI-X controller. :)
Interestingly, I'm using my disks for things similar to your uses. Helps explain the need for storage. Yeah, that's the reason. :p
- mpeg2 encoding files is planned for the next phase.
- regularly record to disk TV programs with Wednesday being the real big day for it. Have two TV Tuners to even accomodate for this.
- Oracle and SQL Server databases
I might convert my dual Opteron into a massive file server/Oracle box due to all the room I have in the case. However, I currently like having 64-bit procs to test with. :)
Do you know of any ATX case that is only 16" in height. The 17"+ cases are hurting me with my fifth computer. All I need is a case and a stick of RAM and I'm in business with having a fifth computer for something-not quite sure what but when a case and RAM is all that is needed I will find a need somehow for it. :p
:look: Really, I'm not addicted to hardware. :look:

eva2000, I love my yy201 case. It's so roomy without all the height. It is deep but that is what makes it so roomy. No drives are hanging over the motherboard and I'm using a 12"x13" motherboard! What I really like is that it converts into a rackmount case if needed. The black case I have is really black and the EMI shields for the drive bays are screwed back into place after you slide in the drives. I like this so much better than the shields you have to rip out and throw away. :)

BTW: Until just a few days ago-I was past the 2TB mark but sold my 120GB super whine WD drive and replaced it with a more reasonable 80GB super quiet Seagate for my Solaris installation. See, I'm not completely :coocoo: :look:
