If I were to choose without already having one I'd probably go with the Hitachi. I already have the Maxtor and it's installed and running great...I thought the Maxtor was 3 gbps
as it is advertised as SATA II.
I now understand SATA II is something of a misnomer and can and does mean many things. My question is this if you were in my shoes would you send the Maxtor back ( I can RMA it) and get the Hitachi. I would lose 50 gb and time invested in my installations as well as the shipping time. I would gain a 3Gbps interface.
The Maxtor has most other SATA II specs i.e NCQ, Staggered spin up. It was manufactured June 2005 and is actually quite fast, actually as fast as the Hitachi in all areas except burst natuarally.
I'm leaning towards keeping the Maxtor as I don't see myself doing a raid setup any time soon. If I intended raid I would probably get the Hitachi as I could order a second one and acheive very fast speeds.
Thoughts and opinions are appreciated if enough people feel a change is in order I won't hesitate to fo it. but I don't think there is enough real world performance difference to warrant the switch but if I'm wrong (and I often am which is why I out this out there) I'd love to know it.
Thanks , Vektor

I would get the Hitachi. I have one and it is fast. Well actually I have 2 raided :) . I am sure the maxtor will be just fine though for what you want and may not be worth your hastle and time. So I guess it is in your court again  . I depends if a couple of percent in performance is worth it to you.

Thanks for the reply. I'm tempted. I'd be losing 50 gb though and I wonder if it's any faster. I wish I could see an article were the two were pitted against each other, because this is a brand new Maxtor(june,2005) I'm hitting 138 mb burst, 54 sustained 13 second random access and a 40 second boot.5 year warranty I might do it though it'll be another 2 weeks while I ship to california and wait for the Hitachi to come back...it's a tough one
Hey we have very similar rigs...very close
I'd like to get that overclock...I haven't tried yet I don't know much about memory timings. Maybe you could share with me your settings. I fold 24/7 though and don't know
if I could handle the heat. But I could work around that.

Here are my HDD results. Keep in mind they are in a raid 0 array.

Soon I think. I haven't found a good team I'm happy with yet...this forum seems nice though I was folding for a little while for extremeOC, I switched to dfistreet where I'm at now but I have to say I find the mod's there (while helpful at times they have a lot of people asking questions I know) needlessly rude to me @ times. So I have actually been thinking of shopping for a team. I can stick with and put up some numbers. I've been holding off so I don't stomp off like an angry kid...lol I have recieved much help there I don't mean to say anything bad about them. I'd just like an enviroment were questions aren't discouraged, rather encouraged. Are their many members here(on the folding team?)

I know what you mean about the street. I do go their and hang around pretty regularly :hide: and sometimes some off the mods are very unproffesional IMHO. This place as you have seen is a little more laid back and more like home ;) . Now don't take what I said totally the wrong way I do like the street. Just IMHO there is no place like BE :o .
Here is a few links for our folding community. We are currently ranked 92 last I checked. We really don't have that many people on the folding team for how high we are ranked. Somewhere around 20 active members. We do have a main core who have been around for a bit though. OK I will quit jabbering now and get some links for you. :D

We really hope you decide to join the team!! If not no hard feelings :) . Bottom line its about the research and helpping to find cures for disease.

Thanks for the information! It sounds like you have a good team here. I tried and am using your ocinformation and am currently stable @ 2.6 GB thank you. I hooked up my vacuum err umm my dual 120 mm intakes over the proc/viceo card sounds like a vacuum cleaner...basically if I'm to overclock I'll have to go water cooling or some other extreme solution. As much as I love a fast machine I'm into quiet nowadays too as I have to sleep next to this thing. I'm currently @ 38 degrees no load but under full load i.e. 2x fah ( a must ) it jumped to a scary 55 degrees and I shut down the programs. So it looks like I'm back to stock, It felt great to have such a nice stable air overclock though. thanks for the info it really worked :~)

Thats a great idea ! I can't find the T7K250 or the 7K500 however and those are Hitachi's 3 gbps offerings.
