View Full Version : Anyone do Far Cry ???

I finally got a copy of Far Cry.
What inspired me to finally get it is it's still listed as Maximum PC Magazine's "favorite game" to play even in this month's issue! And it seemed to be sold out in about half a dozen stores I tried to find it in. I did play the demo last year.
My question is -
Is there anything I need to know to have a great gaming experience with Far Cry such as settings to make or add-ons to get?

This single player is awesome. IMHO better than HL2 or Doom3. Multiplayer sucks due to a lot of rocket spamming (at least back when I first tried it) Enjoy

I think its a really great game. But id pick Doom 3's graphics over Far Cry's. But Far Cry does have that whole AI thing goin on that makes it funny. And the landscaping on Far Cry is a work of art.

I just kept notching it up till it got slow then backed it off a bit and enjoyed it immensely. :yup:
Played it, finished it and now it's collecting dust on the shelf. . . . :yup:

Just be sure to get the latest updates to the game. Graphics didn't look right until I did that.

Its an awsome game. I'm thinking about starting it up again after i get my upgrade, then i can see what the graphics should be looking like.

I've got it cranked up pretty high on my Radeon 9800 Pro. It is looking pretty darn great. The shadows, the trees, the bushes, and everything else especially the water and waves in the ocean!

This game is definitely replayable. There are different paths to the destinations and I find as I reload checkpoints that the game sometimes sets up differently with reloads.

I'm running v.1.31 right now. I heard a rumor that you can't use alt-tab with v.1.32 to temporarily escape the game but I don't know if that's really true. I ran the first level with the stock out of the box version.
Anyone got any good in game tips? I picked up a good tip about rock throwing at the FarCry forums.
Back to the game. This is a good one.

Did you have the settings high enough yet to observe the bazillion critters in the air/trees/grass everywhere? :look:

No. Haven't seen that yet. Does everything have to be set on "Very High" to get that? Or can the settings be backed down a bit somewhere?

I played the game when it first came out on my 9600XT, I drove the settings up, I believe it was Very High. It wasn't playable with those settings but I remember the grass had lots of critters moving about and the sky had spectacularly colored birds etc. I have uninstalled the game but am considering trying it again since I have another PC with a better graphics card now. Perhaps it will even be somewhat playable with those higher settings? I do remember thinking to myself at the time I saw them all that the distraction they cause would really multiply the difficulty of the game though!

Thanks again Jorrell for the quick save tip. I never would have gotten this far (this fast) without a quicksave available to use.

If that is the area with the buggy and the narrow area leading up to tons of bad dudes with rocket launchers etc. try using the buggy as a weapon. Just charge as many of them as fast as you can with it. Save lots!

No need for that.
Just before the top of the hill, I sniped the two mercs in the 4WD and then took over that vehicle. Then I slowly drove to the top of the hill in it and a bit further on over the other side. If you don't make any sudden moves in the dark of the night the mercs will think you're one of them. Then a few key strategic well planned and well placed rocket/morter shots from the rocket/morter launcher in the 4WD truck and key pockets of mercs are gone for good. Throw the truck into reverse and back up the hill and over the other side of it. Switch to machine gun mode in the 4WD and turn on the Cryvision nightvision and all the rest of the mercs can be easily seen and picked off as they come over the top of the hill. If you used the binoculars to register each and every one first on your radar screen before you start any shooting, you know where they are and when they're coming. After all the action there was one "chicken" merc who stayed hiding behind a tree. I went and got him on foot last.

Oh I thought you meant "THE VOLCANO", after you fall over the waterfall go through some woods, reload in a downed chopper and take over an armory, you'll see. :thumb: Good luck! :yup:

I did mean the Volcano.
This is the area after you: 1) jump the waterfall and swim past the trigens to the area where you reload up, and 2) get in the buggy and jump the lava streams and fat boys to land on the dirt road. Then ... (see previous post) ... before you go into the door to find Krieger and Doyle at the volcano caldera area.

Uh oh!
Got a real problem here.
Every time I click on the Multiplayer tab my computer freezes instantly. The music keeps playing but the only thing that works is C-A-D to allow me to reboot. It won't even let me look into the task manager. :yikes:

pressing the windows key and that type of thing doesn't work in FarCry. it's no surprise the task manager won't show up when you're in menu. have you tried walking away from it to eat lunch or something then coming back?

Thanks for your reply 5-Clicks.
It was a firewall problem.
I finally took a clue from the ZoneAlarm permission window that kept appearing in the frozen screen. Since the screen was frozen, I could not give permission for FarCry to access the internet. Eventually I went into ZoneAlarm and set the permission before starting FarCry up. Now all is fine. I made it to the FarCry multiplayer servers. Wow does everything still look great there!

last night I decided to give FarCry a swing again but this time pump up the settings. i beat the game on a 9600XT and 512mb of RAM. on this here X800 vanilla and the same sticks of crummy 512mb i'm running Very High on everything @ 1024x768 without any hitches. when my gig of VX comes in, i'll turn up the AF and maybe AA or res. looks purdy!
i think Half-Life 2: Lost Coast might just take the graphics crown for a while with the new HDR and lighting effects. :yup:

When HL2LC comes out that is. Right now FC has the crown. Just look at that water! And don't forget to listen to all the sounds!
