Okay...

so I just recorded this t.v. show (15 minutes of it) in uncompressed avi format and it takes up almost 6 gigs!!!

so obviously i wanted to encode this into a format that takes up less space

what program can i use?

also.. seems like when i play it back, it won't play back on windows media player... weird...

6 Gigs! Are you sure it's 6 Gig or is it 6 Meg? I just recorded a TV Show for the length of 1 hour using avi codec and it's 600Meg. What are you using for recording. I used ShowShifter Pro for this recording.

i used leadtek tv tuner and whatever program comes with it!

I'm using the same tuner but if you use the mpeg instead of avi you will use under 2 Gig for a 1 hour show. Apparently the uncompressed avi format is way to big. I can watch with media player what I record in mpeg with the LeadTek tuner. I just happen to like the ShowShifter Pro program which happens to provide me with the divX codec for compress avi.

did showshifter pro come with the tuner card or did you get it else where?

and what format do you usually use to record?

I purchased ShowShifter Pro back when I had the ATi 8500dv. I hated the ATi MMC software so much that I found out about ShowShifter. Tried it and have been hooked ever since. However ShowShifter Pro does cost more that the tuner itself. :( Being that I purchased the license for the 8500dv, it was not a big deal for me to switch the license to the LeadTek. The AIW 9600 Pro I have seems to work ok with the MMC. ShowShifter Pro comes with a DivX Pro license so I have DivX compressed avi codec I'm using for recording.

There are other options for software but ShowShifter Pro works for me.

You can grab freeware program like that of virtualdub and configure different codecs there from uncompressed avi to compressed avi....Play with it a bit but it does the best job of synching audio and video together out of any capturing program I have seen including 100+ dollar software....

virtualdub - that's the one I keep hearing about. Thanks Duvie. :)

I like compressed avi because it makes it very easy to move data from one computer to another and still be able to watch the recording.
