View Full Version : Disappointed with P4P800

I know this is going against the grain,but after doing the benches it seems my P4G8x Granite Bay board is faster with a 2.4b chip than this P4P800 sprindale board is with a 2.4c chip.And that's with the same 3.222mhz running on both of them.

System#1
Chip=2.4c
Board=Asus P4P800
Heatsink=mx-4000
ps=Antec 400w
Ram=2x256 Corsair 3200LL
Video card=Asus geforce4 4200 @285-595

System#2
Chip=2.4b
Board=P4G8X
everything else is the same

best I could do stable with the P4G8X

3222@180FSB 1:1 mem ratio Sandra buffered=4387
3dmark 2001 = 14887

And now the P4P800

3222@268FSB 5:4 mem ratio Sandra Buffered=5534
3dmark 2001 = 14500

Voltages were the same for both boards.
corev=1.575
DDRv=2.65
agpv=1.6
Turbo on both
2-2-3-6 on P4P800 with MAM on
2-2-2-6 on P4G8X

So even though the P4P800 memory scores blow away the P4G8x,the P4g8X still beats it by quite a bit in 3dMark ??

A few other scores for the P4P800 using the best scores at the other mem ratios.
3382@282FSB Mem ratio 3:2 2-3-3-6 timings
Sandra 5091 3dmark 14313

2582@215FSB Mem ratio 1:1 2-3-3-6 timings
Sandra=4645 3dmark=13151

and another interesting thing.MAM seems to have an impact on my system even when run async.

3222@168FSB Mem Ratio 5:4 2-3-3-6
MAM on
Sandra=5484 3dmark=14443

same settings MAM off

Sandra=5384 3dmark=14330

I was hoping for a boost like I got with the Granite Bay board.Doesn't look like it will happen.

im not surprised. mem scores aint everything.

have you tried your 2.4b on the p4p800 yet?

(4:5 ratio on a p4g8x? typo?)

Ardy
06-01-2003, 04:20 PM
That was a typo:o "edited" Haven't got around to trying the "b" yet. I thought I might do a few UT2003 comparisons.I still have my P4G8X scores written down somewhere.It's still hard to believe that @1079fsb,hyperthreading,Mam ect. that the old setup was a bit faster.

ThugsRook
06-01-2003, 04:22 PM
of course ;)
why do you think im still sitting on a p4g8x? :wave:

ive already gone thru a IC7, and sold it.

Ardy
06-01-2003, 04:42 PM
I still have mine too:) Now which one to sale:confused: The P4P800 does have a bright future as faster memory becomes available at a reasonable price.Then running 1:1 at DDR 500 might push this right past the P4G8X. One interesting thing is to run dual ddr on this board you use slots 1 and 3 or 2 and 4, instead of on the P4G8x 1 and 2 or 3 and 4.

ThugsRook
06-01-2003, 04:47 PM
so thats what it takes to beat a p4g8x?

a new system and 500ddr? :wave:

im interested in your 2.4b comparison between those boards.....
could it actually get worse?

:beer:

Ardy

I'll set the "b" up in it this week.To be fair,the P4P800 IS much faster at non-overclocked settings:rolleyes:

ThugsRook

LOL! um yea :rolleyes:

hehe ~
ill be joining you by the end of this week ~ ive got a p4p800 comin my way as well.

p4g8x
room temp = 76*F
cpu idle = 46*C
moboard idle = 32*C

cpu loaded = 57*C
board loaded = 33*C

specs in sig...

Idle
P4g8x - 41c
P4P800-33c

Load using Prime
P4g8x - 56c

Those are some interesting results especially when the P4P800 is overclocked.Seems like it takes a performance hit which aint to cool.I should have the P4P800 in by Tuesday the latest.Maybe the 4 of us can compare results.I will be using a 2.4C L0310 (Killer Week:D ) and 2/256MB sticks of OCZ PC3700EL Dual Channel memory.I think it was a mistake to get the 2.4C though.The P4P800 I believe is stable up to 280 FSB give or take a couple FSB so I may not see the full potential of my chip if its a smoker.The memory will hold me back on top of that at 1:1 so its a no win situation.Have to wait for DDR 600 and a mobo that will do over 300FSB stable.

Keep these comparisons coming - Please.

I am in the market for a P4P800 to go with a 2.8C and my TwinMos PC3700. Very strange since my P4C800 out performs my P4G8X. It does'nt blow it away but it is definately faster in every real world test that I ran.

UT2003 scores at 3.222mhz settings as above.

1024x768

Flyby
P4g8x=175.3
P4P800=174.5

Bots
P4G8x=85.1
P4p800=80.5

Ardy,what bios you running on the P4P800?.The new 1.007.001 is the fastest so far.The original 1.005 was faster than the 1.006,but the new one is the best yet so far.

I'm running the 1005 . I like to let the beta testers have a few days with the poison snakes:D

You really do need to flash the 1007 it makes a huge diference to performance.

I can't overclock as high with the P4P800 than I can with the BH7 using a 2.4B chip.My 2.4B will do 189FSB at 1.65V on the bh7 and 183 default voltage.189 is unattainable and 183 was unstable with the P4P 800 and all relaxed timings using OCZ PC3500EL dual channel ram 2 sticks of 256.I am also overvolting .06 with this board.I am sitting at 1.584 idle.Since I don't know if this board is going to hold me back soon as 2.4C comes in today.I might have to by another mobo just to see if this thing is limiting me in any way.

Could you just put a 2.8C in that board and run it 1:1 so I can decide if I want one of these boards or not.

Please ;) :wave:

I received my 2.4C today.I can boot at 270FSB at default vcore.I tried 280FSB with 1.65V and would hang soon as I exit the bios.This board is weird.If I shut my computer down from the switch on the back of the PS.When I hit the switch back to on to the PS the computer will turn on:scratch: .No need to power up from the front.I really don't like what I am seeing from my board.It did come with the corner of the box smashed,but no damage to the mobo.The shipping box on the one corner had a big hole from the hit it took,torn wide open.

Well I downloaded Bios 1007 and I'm a happy camper now:-)

best I could do stable with the P4G8X

3222@180FSB 1:1 mem ratio Sandra buffered=4387
3dmark 2001 = 14887

And now the P4P800 with Bios 1005;

3222@268FSB 5:4 mem ratio Sandra Buffered=5534
3dmark 2001 = 14500

And the P4P800 with Bios 1007;
Sandra buffered = 5804
3dmark 2001 = 15026

Still not much of a bump over the P4G8X,but at least it's a keeper now.

My final words on this....I am still dissappointed with the results of this setup.This 2.4c chip on this motherboard gets me a total of 150 increase in 3dmark over my 2.4b setup with the P4G8X.Not at all what I had hope for.So...I sold the board and the chip and will go back to the old setup until something better comes along.I hope those that bought this board have better luck with it than I did.Thugsrook seems to be satisfied with it.I think for me a video card upgrade would do a whole lot more......:wave:

i think im only happy with it cause i didnt buy a chip ;)

i donno, i may have just got lucky on this one :scratch:

(i got a 400 point 3dmark increase)

Yep:D Sometimes I think luck has a lot to do with it:chit:

actually the chip was a killer chip.I was able to run 287fsb @266 stable.I think there is a wide variance in the abilities of the motherboard from sample to sample.At least that's what I'm gathering from the different results people are getting:scratch:
