Did you read that somewhere Thugs? :eyepop:

intel website (http://downloadfinder.intel.com/scripts-df/filter_results.asp?strOSs=All&strTypes=DRV%2CUTL&ProductID=961&OSFullName=All+Operating+Systems&submit=Go%21) only shows drivers for WinXP.

and a blurb from the readme file:

2. SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS

1. The system must contain the following Intel products:
* Intel(R) Pentium(R) 4 Processor
* Intel(R) 82801ER I/O Controller Hub

2. The kit software should be installed on systems with at
least the minimum system memory required by the
operating system.

3. Microsoft Windows XP Professional or Home Edition

4. Installation of the Intel(R) Chipset Software
Installation Utility prior to loading the Intel(R)
Application Accelerator RAID Edition.
WTH? :smash:

That's amazing...don't suppose it's possible Intel is working with MS to weed out older versions? Nah.....what is it about XP that you wouldn't be able to use other versions?

i checked out the SI RAID chip on my current P4G8X ICH4 and it can run RAID0 under win98/me.

not supporting Win98 is a bad idea for ICH5.

and how would you know? If you were the normal guy out looking for the latest and greatest, you wouldn't know till you tried to get it to work and realized you need to upgrade your OS....:P I agree...bad idea...

This won't effect buying an add-in card will it?

the Highpoint controllers i looked into do support win98 systems.
but then again they arent ICH5 are they?

(ICH5 is faster then ICH4 cause its not on the PCI bus ~ the whole point of running ICH5 sata raid0)

i could run sata raid0 on this ICH4 board ~ but my upgrade paths are getting more and more limited every day.

well,
i went ahead and ordered an ASUS P4P800 from googlegear.
i guess ill cross the ICH5 sata/raid bridge when i get to it.
maybe by then there will be a work around, or ill make one myself :yummy:

i really wanna trade in my single wd 80jb for a pair of raptors, so it will be a priority.

LMK if you guys come up with any info on this.

Thugs, I pulled this down from the Intel site. It talks about legacy mode and native modes on the ICH5 for S-ATA and P-ATA. Something to do with the OS not being able to work with 6 IDE devices…etc

It’s all above my head but maybe one of you guys can make heads or tails out of it

thx RH :)

after reading that and reading the p4p800 manual ~ im more confused then ever.

it says you can do RAID0 in legacy mode (win9x) ~ whatever that means.
i dont see how if there arent any drivers.
sounds to me like even if i got it running its gonna run like garbage.
id prolly be better off getting a PCI SATA card that will allow me to run as many drives as i wish.

im surprised with all the P4P800 reviews not one has ever mentioned this cr@p.

Probably going to have to wait for Microsoft to get with Intel or the motherboard makers and release some drivers or service packs….maybe even third party venders because I don’t think Win98 is officially supported any more

Hopefully the motherboard makers will do some driver tweakin for there respective boards and bring the performance up a bit.

Thugs I thought you discussed with me that you were going to upgrade to winxp pro???

I too really need to get into this SATA world with some raptors:yummy:

i did run WinXp for about 2 weeks and was very happy with it til i ran into some unfixable bugs that i am not able to live with (period).

this could be a major problem for me in the next few years and theres even a possibility i will be "out of the game" for good.

I hear ya...I thought I was going to have to drop winxp to run cadd since the version I had would not run in winxp without a 1000 dollar upgrade...Luckily my company did upgrade it for me under the guise we where getting a couple new laptops and they would be bundled with winxp standard....

what were the bugs??? were thy software and hardware compatability issues????

ThugsRook

hardware related to WinXP security.

WinXp does not allow for any keyboard remapping ~ this means i cant play any games. if i cant play any games then i dont need a computer.

i dont like where MS is going with OSes.
its like driving an ammored car around town insted of an econemy car.

no such thing as a minimum install?
not everyone has a network and needs all this garbage.

you guys think this is to your advantage? no, its MS's advantage to own your computer.

XP Key remapping (http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,4149,812959,00.asp) Doesn't look easy but it may work...
More? (http://www.pitt.edu/~kconover/keithbet.htm)

From what I read, you need a utility named Tradekeys 2

Go SCSI! It's incredible. You'll never go back. And when will SCSI ever get old? Never, that's when. :D

Seriously, just a couple of 15k.3's from Seagate, a SCSI RAID adapter, and you're off.

im hearing so many complaints about ICH5 sata raid that i dont care anymore ;)

when the prices come down or the drives get larger, ill get a pci card.

i got 2 raptors in raid-o in my gaming rig. i can really notice that it's fast especially when i'm moving large files . benchmark results are good too, e.g. 70K+ in sandra, 100K+/100K+ in ATTO ..

the only thing i hate about it is NOISE. i cant stand the noise. im so used to my seagate. i was forced to build a quiet surfing rig (shuttle xpc) with panaflo and seagate + KVM so that i dont have to listen to it's high-pitched sound at all times.

**i cant believe ASUS didnt include a driver for the Intel ICH5 RAID controller (in the p4p800-D installation CD) .. i had to use the floppy that came with my IC7..

ThugsRook
06-19-2003, 07:47 PM
can the IC7 do sata ICH5R in Win9x?
is this an ASUS only issue?

ill have to check on this...... thx :)

can the IC7 do sata ICH5R?

yes it can and i got almost the same ATTO and sandra results ..

for the first time i didnt have to reinstall the OS when i transfered my raptor in raid-0 from my IC7 into my p4p800-d.. i used to have this kind of problem when tranfering my IDE HD (boot HD) from one mobo to another.. (one thing i dont like with windows XP)..

IC7, IC7g, IS7, IS7g all have the ICH5R sata RAID chips but again will not work with win9X...XP only...there are no drivers for 9X.....

Asus p4p800 and p4p800D both do ICH5R Raid also....the drivers are generic for raid and can be gottin from Intel's website....again...XP only.

ThugsRook

thx shoman for clearing that up :)

win9x has an IRQ conflict with the ICH5 that is supposedly unfixable and hence no drivers to enable sata raid

ill have to get a PCI card for SATA raid if i want it on 9x ~ thx
