This is an excerpt from dvdrhelp.com faq:

Can I copy a DVD Movie like copy an AudioCD if I have a DVD Writer/Burner?
No, both because of DVD copy protection AND most DVD Movies are on dual layer dvds(9GB) while it only exists single layer dvdrs/dvdrw/dvd+rws(4GB) so besides "ripping and decrypting" the DVD to the harddrive you also must either cut something out, use two dvdrs or reencode like when making SVCD or VCD. Ifoedit is a good tool for all this, read more how under the
DVD Ripping section DVD. (http://www.dvdrhelp.com/dvdripping.htm#dvd)

im not sure what the program is called, but it allows you to re-encode the dvd as a real dvd.

you can remove the "extra stuff" or lower the quality slightly so it will fit on a single 4.5gb dvdr. or you can just split the movie for a simple 2 dvd burn.

HTH :)

that is pretty good man!

what i concern the most is now when decrypting it to your HDD and it taking ages, doesn't it?

my system can rip a dvd to my HD (as a dvd for divx encoding) in 5-10mins depending on the movie.

im not sure how long it takes to reencode a dvd as a dvd tho.

for decrypting i use www.dvddecrypter.com it works well and the best thing about it it is free. :) and to get it ready burn as far as editing and stuff like that i use www.dvd2one.com. it seems to work well but i think it cost's forty bucks but i have fit some long movies on to a dvd using this program and the quality of the movie still looks good to me. and i use a dvd-r btw.

i use SmartRipper (freeware) to rip a dvd to HD.

:)

thanks colteh and thugs!

i used both programs but i prefer DVD Decrypter over smartripper :)

but what other programs that can be used to convert the decrypted files into MPEG files besides DVD2one?

Hey...i agree stick with dvd-decyrptor it offers more functionality if you really want to backup up entire movies or just the movie portion.....

DVDshrink is one of the best programs I have found that can take the whole movie and shrink it by a ratio to fit on a standard dvd-r...I have done whole ones so I know it works. mainly though I onlyu do the movie with a selected track (dump the french!!!) and no subtitles (don't need them). This often can take a movie down to fit on a standard dvd-r by itself.

Rule of thumb I have seen is that 1hr 40min movie of average quality bitrate will be the max to get it to fit on a standard 4.7gb dvd-r or dvd-rw....anything oevr that and the program will start to reduce the bitrate by a determined ratio to get it to certain size.

I use Ifoedit to clean the movie down to the soundtrack I wnat and no subtitles. This is necessary to rewrite the vectors for the appropriate ifo and bup files. Then I go to dvdshrink only if I am over the amount to fit on one dvd-r/rw.....

Like mentioned above most standard DVD's now are all dual layer due to the more complexed menus, directory commentaries, trailer and extras, etc. MOst of that crap I don't need or want. This really helps to pick what you want only.

Good guides go to www.doom9.net or pm me I have links to;

How to fit a dvd9 (dual layer disc) on one dvd5 (single layer standard)

How to fit dvd9 on 2 dvd5's...span it....

How to shrink them...

How to tear them apart, etc...

stay away from dvd2one...highly buggy and not free!!!!

Also stay away from rempeg as it is way too long (hours compared to minutes with dvdshrink) and it seemed to for all that time being jumping and jerky in certain films when dvdshrink was not....

Start a thread over in the apps forum where we can discuss this a bit more....

I may put together a review and link the guides I use on some of these programs....

3 simple steps to ripping a DVD:

1) Use DVDdecrypter.
2) Use Instant Copy (you can edit out files such as extra languages, subtitles, etc., to get the file size down, then compress it to fit on a single CD.) This takes longer than DVD2One but offers a nicer copy (IMHO) and far more control of the editing and compression processes.
3) Burn to DVD (I use Nero)
.
See, isn't that easy;)? Not so fast, you'll need to educate yourself on every part of the process, particularly steps 1 and 2. As Duvie mentioned previously, Doom9.org (http://www.doom9.org/) is a terrific resource for all of these programs and techniques. Have fun with it:)!

Erik...Is that instant copy a freeware program or retail??? I would like to try it and compare it....

I generally have stuck to ifoedit and some of the guides at www.doom9.net using the freeware since I am a cheapskate!!!!

I have used dvd2one...don't like it!!!!
I have not used dvdxcopy but I know that is a retail program in the 70-90 dollar range I believe.

I too use nero, but I first take my files and create a dummy directory on the c:\ drive called.... video_ts...Then I use windvd and redirect it to read that directory and it will confirm for me all is properly constructed to dvd player standards. The video_ts folder is a must....

Hey, nice tip Duvie:)! I'll have to remember that one, since I have a copy of WinDVD laying around somewhere;).

Pinnacle Instant Copy is not freeware. Can't remember what it costs but it must be something like $50. PM me and I'll tell you more about it, if you like.

Hmmm too bad....

I believe that often times those retail programs are quite nice in the sense they are one self-contained program with a lot of functionality. Can it be done with freeware?? Yes but it is more likely one will have to use a few programs in conjunction to get to same desired end point.
