I am attempting to install Seagate 160 gb sata drives to my P4C800-E deluxe with Win XP Professional. At install I can't get the drives recognized. I have tried plugging them into both controllers, tried just about every adjustment in the bios, tried copying the drivers off the Asus cd and reinstalling them during OS install boot-up. For a short time they seemed to be recognized by the bios. I can build the arrays with Alt+c1 on the intel controller and fast build on the Promise controller. Regardless of what I try install proceeds to the same point and tells me there are no hard drives present. What am I missing?

try setting the ide to compatible mode rather than enhanced if you can..it may help.

Check the jumper settings on your Seagate drives.

I appreciate the answer and the tip. Problem is I am running S-ATAs. Satas do not have jumper settings, there is no Master and Slave relationship. I have attempted the install at least a dozen times, I can do a standart install, C and D drive but unable to Stripe. Another anomaly I am running into is I am unable to set partitions. XP is only allowing me the whole drive as a single partition.

I have made The Promise and Via driver floppy disks and both seem to install properly at the "F6" command at windows startup. In the bios I have set "Enhanced" "S-Ata" and Configure as raid and enabled the boot-rom so I can make sure the array exists. All proceeds well until install is to start and I receive error "No storage devices present install can not continue press F3 to abort.

I am using 4 Seagate 160gb drives (S-ATA) 2 are on VIA and 2 are on the Promise controller. I currently have the promise controller disabled although I have tried to enable and use it for install I get the same result.

I am missing something, probably simple. How bout it guys, any ideas? I called ASUS last week (Tuesday) and was assigned to level two and still have not heard back from them.

The drives on the ICH5-R, need to have the boot disk created from the IAA 3.5 program. Download IAA 3.5 and make the diver disk for the ICH5-R RAID devices. When windows is installing, press F6 for other devices and insert the floppy. Then Windows will be able to continue to install with the new drives.

The Promise works the same way. Download the latest Promise RAID drivers and drop them onto a floppy disk.

Actually, the jumper settings do sometimes matter, even if you're using SATA drives. I don't know much about your Seagates. But on my Raptors, I've removed the jumpers. And my understanding is that with Maxtor SATA drives, the jumpers for both drives should be on master. Someone correct me if I'm wrong.

Also, you said you have two drives on the VIA controller? Did you mean the Intel ICH5R controller? The P4C800-E doesn't use VIA for SATA/RAID.

Thank you Hawk and Sierra. The Asus install does have a file called VIARAID and that was what I was trying to use. I created the ICH5 diskette from the file under "Chipset" One problem I am still having is that I can not create partitions. When I get to the create partition part XP will not let me create partitions, I wind up with one large C drive. When I request to create a partition the box is filled in with just short of the total volume of the HD and it will not let me change the number (Size). I've set up partitions on hard drives before so this is not new to me. Never worked with SATA drives before though.

As you probably know, you can always create partitions later. Just right click on My Computer, then click on Manage, then click on Disk Management.

Thank you sir. That was one of those things I think I knew at one time but forgot. In any event when I go there all I have is one large 314 gb C drive. there is no unallocated space for me to make partitions with or do anything else with. As luck would have it I still have my previous machine and the two are connected together with the latest IOGEAR KVM switch, double click the Scroll Lock and switch from one box to another.

Sierra, thanks again to you and Hawk. I will try XP reinstall probably Tomorrow and let XP install to its default partition and see if that leave me unallocated space for later partitioning.

Please don't assume I know anything. I don't bruise easily am always grateful for help and better ways. :-)
