There was one member who started a thread and was hosting a gaming server (AFAIK they still are too). There is also another thread that talked about a BE game night.
Give a boo a those threads and maybe resurrect them :thumb:

Well the idea is great, specially if it is BF 2 dedicated, however for Canadian peeps, dunno about other countries but I think USA is the same (with most ISP).
Good and reliable BF 2 server means it has to be up 24 Hrs / 7 days. Good connect speed means that connections has to be in the 2.5 megs + at minimum in order to support 32 X 2 players, but do note that this is 2.5 UP and 2.5 Down. Not the 768 up and 2.5 down offered by High speed DSL to residential customer. Also note that for cable users the bandwith might be there, but if your ISP charges for excess bandwith usage you probably are exposing yourself to a nasty surprise in excess bandwith charge.
Lastly, most ISP do not allow you to have a server ( WEB, FTP, or Gaming) and it is stated in your ISP agreement as a residential customer that is. So check your contracts and billing scheme before jumping into this, you just might end up with nasty bills and/or worst your service being cut off.
Lastly, some 18 months ago I had come across a piece of information that suggested that ABIT would be offering for FREE, access to servers for you to host your favorite game. These servers would be distributed around the world, and the game portion managed by the users.
Sadly, I have yet to see this offer to materialize which was schedule to start rolling out in september 2004. No server and little update I have assume that this plan was out, but recent communication and comments leads me to believe that ABIT still plans on doing this, but sadly I still cannot get a firm date and location for the roll out.
You can find more info here, and locate me on that site under the nick name BlindBat
Excerpt:
Challenge gamers from around the world with ABITGamer.com Game Servers. Coming in September, ABITGamer.com will feature multiple game servers which will allow you to play some of the hottest online games available today. We're setting up game severs in North America, Asia, and Europe to connect gamers from across the globe. Best of all, you can track your stats online at ABITGamer.com, and compare yourself with the world. The cost?
Nothing. Zilch. Zero. Nada.
You read that correctly. ABITGamer.com Game Servers will be absolutely free of charge.
ABITGamer.com Game Servers are slated for operation in September 2004. Get your game on at ABITGamer.com.
Edit: One last note, do note that for BF 2 servers, only the approuved servers from EA will be able to submit stats for world ranking and what not, so sadly this looks like it is already starting to upset some peeps, although most peeps understand it is done to ensure no cheating in stats reporting and unlocking new weapons as you acquire ranks. But many ( me among others) are worried that down the road EA will turn around and charge a monthly fee to access the EA approuve game servers, which in my view is double dipping in people pockets for a game we will have already paid for. But let's wait and see.

No I won't look at that thread ! NAH ! :na:
LOL, my comments are not specific to BF 2, but generally answering the original thread topic...hehe.
However, just for sake of eliminating double posting I shall link my answer here to topboy's corner... :deviltail
