I'm building a gaming rig for my nephew around the Asus A7N8X. Price is a limiting factor. I know the 2500 Barton is a great CPU, but is there another better 'bang 4 the buck' cpu ??
Any thoughts appreciated.
If you have bought no parts yet i would consider sending PiLsY a PM...he has a good gaming rig for sale very cheap and it has all the parts your looking for.
nforce2
cpu at 2.3gig
Twinmos 3700 ram
radeon 9700
etc etc

Thanks for that. I look him up and send a message.
He is a member here so you don't need to look far. Some of the parts are only weeks old and I do know he has enough to build a complete rig minus the monitor/mouse and keyboards.

Any thoughts appreciated. The 1700+ t-bred B is the best price/performance CPU AMD has at the moment with most hitting 2.2ghz-2.4ghz and they cost about 1/2 what the Barton does if you're looking to keep it cheap. I gave my Nephew a P4 rig with a overclocked 1.6A I'd owned over a year and the final cost was very low so I suspect you're lookin' to the same ;)

yep, seems the 1700+B is the one getting the raves.
Also, leaves room for upgrades when AMD moves to 64bit and the top Bartons come down in price. :D

Actually, if you want a handpicked 1700+ (good steppings) you are going to pay a very similar price to what you would pay for a non-handpicked Barton 2500+. At eXcaliberPC.com they have the best 1700+ stepping (JIUHB:0310WPMW/XPMW) for $80.00 and shipping. At Newegg.com they have a RETAIL 2500+ Barton for $97.00 w/ free shipping. Most Bartons also do 2.2 - 2.4 GHz but also have 512k level 2 cache while the tbred 1700+ has just 256k level 2. Bleedin Edge just released this review for the Soltek SL-75FRN-RL, but it is more of a review of how well Bartons are overclocking right now. Hope I helped. :)

yup - got my Barton yesterday from Newegg and it's running at 2550 on water folding right now...:yummy:
Most are 2.2 - 2.4 on air from what I'm reading.
I don't think you can get a much better deal than this Barton.
As far as the boards go I would pay close attention to the voltages allowed on each board...just in case you may want to overclock a bit...;)

My XP2500 (week 7) is pretty happy at 2.2 @ 1.750 volts on air. Doesn't like to go higher even though temps are in the high 40's under load.
I'd recommend an XP2500 because of the increase cache. Lately there have been some people over at the anandtech.com forums that have been having bad luck with the T-Bred B's... they don't seem to wanna hit 2.1 even. On the other hand... most people I've seen who have an XP2500 are getting 2.2 pretty easily.

Only problem might be going through security with them... they'll see em when they x-ray everything... then they might wanna try to charge you some sort of tax, lol.

NOT TRUE!! READ THIS NOW!
CPU City www.cpucity.co.uk (http://www.cpucity.co.uk/acatalog/) are doing JIUHB DLT3C's for £44.94
I got mine from there and a mate has bought 2. Super efficient company and none of the other UK OC stores will guarantee steppings, let alone even sell 1700's.
Consider your bacon well and truly saved.

Our economy is suffering a bit too. N.American visitors to the UK are down 15% on last year. :(
DivideByZero, good link to cpucity, must admit I didn't know them and their prices are keen. I'll be getting a lot more gear in the US incl. a Springdale board and 2.4C :yummy:

Our economy is suffering a bit too. N.American visitors to the UK are down 15% on last year. Probably better than the drop in the number of North Americans visiting France. Visits there are probably down 100% and they depend HEAVILY on North American tourists for thier economy. Maybe I'll visit someday soon. Plane tickets are CHEAP. ;)

I would vote Barton 2500+ at under $100 US it's a bargain. I have mine to 2.0 with AMD retail cooler that I lapped and used AS3 with temps at 42C with full load.
