Just like the RIAA in its crusade it appears as the hollywood giants and MPAA will star tto go after makers of software that defeats the decryption of the DVD....
I think it was about 2 weeks ago that a judge (upholding an older law) handed down the ruling that distributing the codes that crack the CSS decryption amounts to patent and copyright violations.
expect to start seeing a lot of software makers being sued. Will this effect the ability of software out there to do this?? I don't know. Many top software companies make software to do this in the retail market. Pinnacle is one of them.....
However I think the cat is out of the bag and has been for awhile. If they stopped making it now by trusty DVDshrink can go fine. I don't think the MPAA can change security of DVDs now without drastically jeopardizing compatability with current and older DVD players. They wont dare alienate those ppl...

please correct me if im wrong ~ but any software dvd player will unlock the dvd. once its unlocked you can stop playing the dvd and do what you want anyways. (thats how current "legal" rippers work at the moment)

What about something like DVD Genie, I don't think it does anything legal, does it? :p

You are right thugs!!! In mnay instances you need to run your software DVD player a few seconds before you can use say a smartripper or dvd-decryptor or it may fail to detect the files on the disk...
Not sure how the judge will interpret those, but for now this could put retail software like dvdxcopy, instant DVD, and a handful of others up in the air on legality...

Your assumption about pinnacle isn't entirely right Duvie...
Pinnacle applications won't defeat the CSS protection or other protection schemes...
CloneDVD doesn't either but it seems like it has a joint venture with AnyDVD which DOES defeat protections...
I can't argue with Hollywood's thoughts other than a consumer should be able to have a perfect piece of the disc he bought... that would mean they better make sure they create indestructable DVD discs cause that is the main motive behind creating copies.
Microsoft doesn't allow the duplication of it's OS on more than 1 single system either...
Hey... not saying I fully agree with all of this since I'm doing it myself..

I think pinnacle may do a little more then just that.....If it does any recompressing like I believe dvdxcopy can then it has to defeat the css to be able to get in and reduce the bitrate and recompile it.
Also I think to copy a dvd successfully you have to do something past the security or we sould be able to just put a dvd in the burner and the movie in the dvd-rom and drag all the files over...It doesn't work...It doesn't work to just do that to the harddrive and then play it....Something extra must be going on...

Just try to copy a CSS or otherwise copy protected and you will see what I mean. You'll get a warning and are unable to copy the DVD.
Try instantcopy from pinnacle and it will give you a warning. That's why these tools are useless without and descrambling system. Sure, there are a number of non-protected discs and it works for home-made stuff.
You are right, you cannot drag the files from a copy protected disc onto your harddisc. You need DVDdecryptor (or maybe anydvd) for that.
Transcoding has nothing to do with protection. First the protection needs to be removed (or on the fly like anydvd does) and then the transcoding takes place.
